New Design LED tails Done (pics)

this is whats on the car right now, my first try at LED tails:

http://maxima.cardomain.com/memberpage/202250/8

I used a set of altezza lights because they come with a clear lens.

I used 4" truck modules for the tail/stop/turn(same ones you see on trucks around town). Since my car comes with a separate amber turn signal i had to use two relays to make the outside stop light blink instead.

As for the reverse i used a Luxeon 5-watt star LED(most powerfull LED out right now) with a heat sink behind it being powered by a PowerPuck from a ledsupply.com.

this is what the star looks like with the heatsink:

LED

I’m waiting for a nice day to put them on, but that wont happen for a while since its Jan. and i live in NY. Ill put up some more picture when i get them on the car.

here is a good off-angle shot:

I've always thought that Altezza's have poor illuminating abilities as everytime I see a 4th gen in the road up ahead with them on, I can't tell if their blinkers are on or not. However, this style seems way better and brighter! Can you do them on the 95/96 altezzas too? BTW, those are gen 1 altezzas right?

Certainly looked a bit odd unlit but the effect is great when lit up!

Right after you posted this, an idea popped in my head. How about smoking the lenses. When not lit up, the LED's are inconspicuous. Then when you turn on your lights or step on the brakes, it comes to life!

This reminds me of the Range Rover LED tails but theirs is much nicer/classier as there is a ring that serves as tail illumination. When you hit the brakes, the center illuminates bright red for stopping. I forgot how the amber blinker LED's go.

BTW, anyone care to LED-out a gen2 Altezza?

looks great, ive always thought it would be much easier to just take those huge truck modules and put those in instead of fabricate a custom row setup. how did you learn so much about leds and lighting anyways??

but now we have a paradox dont we. one of our most respected members now has altezzas *gasp*. will he be accused of by the altezza haters or will they open there minds to new mods?

Doesn't have an integrated look if you ask me...sorry. If you wonder what I mean, look at the LED's on the S80, S430/500, SL, 325i, TL, A8. Yes, here we go again those are all expensive cars la da da, ok, then look at that KIA that comes with LED's--they look like they were designed for the car, not added-on. The LED's flow with the lense shape, that's what I mean, not a perfect circle put into the lense, that's like a transit bus or tractor trailer.

originally these where just the plain 1st gen chrome Altezza. and it should be the same with 95-96 tails. The only reason i used them was cause they had a clear lens, which i needed for this to work.

i would love to smoke these out with tint, but it would hurt the light output, and i wanted to build something what was original and functional.

As far as not flowing with the car, ill know better when i put them on, but for building it in my room, im happy with the design

pictures, i have more, and i have them sitting in my room, so let me know what you need a picture of

I think they look awesome. Great job.

Two things...

Where are the turn signals ?

Have you thought of maybe tinting the lense with transparent red paint instead of smoke ?

Cool, nice job on the turn signals being the outer circles.

And if you want to get rid of red in the rear, then just leave them clear as they are, I think they look great. Why tint them and hide it all ? They'll get many compliments on AND off.

Can you get some daytime shots with real light instead of flash light? I'd like to see how they look in the daytime not illuminated.

Can I buy your old tails?

George,

I love the custom work. I was going to say that I don't like the ugly chrome/shiny borders of the altezzas but maybe they will match your silver car so it won't stick out like if they were on a black max.

Nice job using the Luxeon 5 w. Very original given that they just came out!

Please post more pics from different angle and with different illumination! Thanks!
Good work. Keep it up!

Those are very unique and creative. It should go well with your other custom mods that you have done. Hopefully, you'll find some way of getting them installed regardless of the cold weather.
