since our gauge clusters have the slot down the middle for the PRND21 (this is for automatics obviously) but it was never added, i wish there was a way we could. my first question is: do the maximas in other countries come with this feature? if so maybe we could arrange for someone to grab some from a junkyard and add the neccessary wiring.

my second idea was to maybe buy a gauge cluster from a camry on ebay or a junkyard and to try to substitute their portion because it looks to be the same size. this is just an idea so who knows if it would work, but there's only two ways to find out.

so what do you think? i know it's not a huge deal but would be a cool mod. just one of those small things i wish nissan did stock, but ah well.

obviously those gauges are a little different but i'm just curious if we could remove those parts for it. i just don't know how i'd go about wiring it up so it knew which gauge it is in. i know some people have done the manumatic thing so there has to be a way for this.

the late Araffio customized this portion on his car. I'm not remembering whether or not he had a write up...

didn't he just have shift lights in there? blue leds, not the letters themselves.

do you have a FSM for your car? I looked in the AT section of the 95 manual on page AT-38 and it has the wiring diagram showing the wires going to the AT control unit. Each one gets power in when the shifter is in a different position (PRND21) so you could hook it up without too much trouble. The hard part would be physically mounting it in your gauges. I doubt you'd be able to use the Camry gauges and I'm not sure what's behind that part of your stock guages that might get in the way. I think I've seen someone do it with LEDs before, but I think the Camry thing would look better.

Wire up the lights (or LEDS) with ground always going to them and then the power lead of each one should be tapped into the A/T control unit. For some reason, it shows the P and N sensor wire being connected so it might show both LEDs in either position but the rest would work.

you're the man craig, thanks for the help. i do have a fsm on my old computer, i'll have to transfer it to my new one. i was actually thinking the opposite, that the gauge part would be the easiest because the slots are there so cutting wouldn't be a problem. i think if i got my hands on the letters they shouldn't be too hard to do. but i guess i'll need a set in front of me before i make assumptions.

i have a spare gauge cluster sitting here to work on in the meantime so i'll try to do more research and update the thread accordingly.
