how to tell what my MPG is?

maybe this has been asked before, im not sure. the search doesnt work though
wondering what you all do to calculate miles per gallon, for me it's litres.
i read someone got 32.2 mpg, and that seems realy accurate. so i figure there must be a way to tell. just want to know how mine is doing, thanks

Why do you say that? Why don't you just give the answer? You of all people should know that we Americans are one of few nations that don't use the metric system and still use the Imperial system. I routinely have to speak in centigrade, km, meters, kg. when I speak to one of my Russian g/f's.

1 mile = 1.609 km
1 gal = 3.7854 litre

1 km = .6214 mi
1 litre = .2642 gal

So if you drive 362 km and use 31 litres to do it, convert both to English before doing the mpg calc:

362 km multiplied by .6214 = 225 miles (or divide by 1.61)

31 litres divided by 3.7854 = 8.2 gal (or multiply by .2642)

So 225 mi divided by 8.2 gal = 27.44 mpg

Put it in a spreadsheet and you only have to do it once and plug-in later.

It's unfortunate that we have two systems and not simply metrics, but as Americans we must continue to use the Imperial system (it's like trying to learn to ski or play ice hockey after 6 or 7 years of age, not too realistic)--we have to do calculations, no matter how easy or quickly we can do the conversion, to be able to relate to metrics. For example, I know how 9 degrees F feels, that is the current temp. And I can quickly subtract 32 and divide by 1.8 or roughly 2 to get about -11C (-12.8). But I have to do the conversion to understand how -11C feels....get it?

I've been accustomed to calculating mpg using Imp and embarassingly haven't bothered to learn the metric calculation (L/100kms).

On the level, it's funny how even in the Canada forum we use Imp mpg.

Thanks for the helpful tidbit on the temperature conversion though
