If it is the starter, how much to replace, and is it a DIY job?

Other thoughts as to what it may be? It is on my wifes 98 btw. It makes a snap pop when I turn the key. I purchased a new battery hoping that was the reason. No such luck.

 

Starter could be fried if it's popping. If it's clicking, then it could be a dead battery.

 

There's a pop, but no clicking.

 

Take it to autozone, napa, pepboys, etc.. they will test it for free...

and if you can change your brakes, you can change your starter
