Place Racing CAI noises???
I just installed my Place racing Cold Air Intake. It wasnt really that bad to install. It took maybe 2 hours for me to do it. But whenever i get on it really hard i hear a loud popping like there is something inside the cone. The popping is for only a sec or two but its annoying the hell out of me. It does it around 4k RPM's or until the car shifts into 4th. I checked to see if anything is loose or hittin the cone. I found that the plastic in the wheel well does touch the cone. Could that be whats doin it? Does anyone else have this problem or have any suggestion for me?
Yes it is the liner
Greetings,
At higher RPMs the motor actually shifts position, this is caused by the force of the rotation of the main axis.
When the motor shift occurs, it displaces the CAI into the liner and that is what you hear.
There is another problem associated with this shift and it is rubbing. All CAIs have the problem. It tuns out that the CAI rubs against cables, the cut walls of the wheel well and anything in the way. This causes the powder coating tu rub off (or paint for that matter) and beging the oxidation process.
To prevent such problems, the best way is to install a rubber washer to the newly cut hole.
Actually, if you go to Home depot, and look for rubber hoses, you will find one type that is sturdy but soft. You might be able yo use this (with silicone) around the hole to prevent the scratching and preserve the metal, and also use a toilet bowl seat (a rubber washer type) that is of about 3" diameter. This will prevent the CAI from sligding in to far and bump against the wheel well.
One last thing, make sure to check for clearences and to dress the CAI with anti-scratching materials on those places where there could be rubbing.
All this will limit the noises and preserve both your car and the CAI.
For the banging, you might wat to reset your filter further up (closer to the wheel well) and create a bigger gap between the filter and the liner.
Good luck,
