You're right...when I got my new plates last month, there was an enclosure that said you're not supposed to put anything over the plates. I've had them on for about a year now and no problems. Luck and probaby because the tinted shields aren't super dark.
I think they're similar to tints on the windows, where it's a secondary offense. If you get pulled over for speeding, they'll bust you for speeding, tinted windows AND a tinted plate.

Yeah, I know that people usually don't get into too much trouble for them, but they don't come with a disclaimer that says 'for off road use only' like clear corners do. Since you can buy them at a auto parts store, I figured that I would alert him.
