I also wonder how many of the owners who experience squeaks and rattles have messed around with their suspension, lowered their cars etc. and if some of the problems can be associated with that. Again my suspension is stock and no problems whatsoever.

this is definitely an issue i was concerned with, being someone who just switched from 3rd to 4th gen a couple weeks ago. The first thing i noticed was how sturdy and solid the 3rd gen feels, then how big a akward the 4th gen is (and full of squeeks). i think i might reconsider buying the ypipe and exhaust and go with some supension upgrades...

I would trade everything the 3rd gen has over the 4th for the beloved VQ!!!

nuff said...

also, I would rather put in my own VIM and LSD and put in much better ones than what the factory puts in!! (30% locking VLSD....c'mon?) I like adding my own VIM and tuning it to where I want it to open...not to mention the MEVI breathes better than the VIM on the 3rd gens looking at the dynoes....and don't even get started on the composite (not plastic) VIM's of the 5th gens....those things have phenominal tq...and after a hard drive, pop your hood and feel how cool they are...not to mention light...looking at every performance engine now....all composite manifolds....all following nissans idea off the 2000 maxima!

and a side note, I can take or leave the IRS as I have seen way too many suspension modded, dialed in 4th gen's rocking really good times on the AutoX course competing against plenty of cars with IRS and I also know plenty of "weekend warrior" track drivers with 4th gen's that have proof on video of them side by side through turns with plenty of coupes and other so called "sports cars"! (with experienced drivers mind you)...so pending all of this evidence I have....I can take or leave IRS....

add a VIM and quaife and your set on the 4th gen's!
add the VQ and various amenities on the 3rd gen and your set!

they both have their trade-offs fer sher!! that is true with any car...
but the weakest link in any maxima is it's chassis fer sher...add in the SFC's and all the squeeks and rattles go away...! btw in my '95 maxima....my leather is holding up better and I have less squeaks an rattles than my mom's old 3rd gen and my brother's 2000 audi S4

the fact that I have perfect compression @134K miles and over 200whp aside...I love my 4th gen and all maxima's...my first maxima was in fact a 3rd gen...

maybe ppl have squeaks/rattles from getting into an accident which might've knocked something loose or something

I remember my automatic 92 GXE came with heated side mirrors. It also had a switch that enabled the car to go from regular shifting to sporty shifts, kind of like what the modified JWT transmission computer does. My current GXE does not have either of these things . One other thing that at first I did not like on my 3rd gen was the key pad on the door (at first I was not liking the numbered pad on the door), that was until my keys were locked in the car and I was able to open it with the code .

I have put a good amount of Dynamat, and pieces of rags (this helped alot with the A-pillars) in my 4th gen, but with time more rattles have come about. I have some Dynamat that a friend gave to me, I will use it for the rear doors and on the rear shelf. I have some on the bottom of the rear shelf, but this time I will add some to the top.

I enjoyed the time spent driving my 3rd gen, but I am happy with my 4th gen. My family's the next vehicle will be an SUV. Kids are getting older/bigger so they need more room. I am still going to stick with Nissan, looking at an Armada.

You are 100% correct!! Stiffer suspension, means hitting the bumps harder, therefore loosening nut and bolt over time.

I used to have rattles up the @ss, but by replacing the struts and the bearings, bump stop/ boots, and various rubber bushings, getting actual QUALITY tires (i.e. over $100 per tire), getting the revised door panel clips, and hitting all the areas in the TSB with squeek tape, I now have none at all.

I followed up with some sound deadening for the trunk and doors to kill road noise and thats all she wrote.

I don't have any squeeks and rattles on mine, but even if I did I'd gladly put up with them for the VQ. The 92-94 SE 5spd is comparible to a 4th gen as far as power and all but I always doubted it's reliability, and when it's not running right it will not keep up with the VQ. Mine never had too many issues but definitely wasn't as trouble free or as torquey as the VQ. I had a hard time investing too much money in a VE that could very well cost me either several hours or time or $1000 just to replace VTC's, and Plus there's not much you can do with a VE after basic bolt-ons, but there's lots of options with the VQ whether you want to go NA or FI. And if the VE is so comparible to the VQ then where are all the quarter mile timeslips? They may be close with bolt-ons but what happens after you've bolted on all that you can with the VE? Your pretty much stuck in the mid to high 14's with a ticking VTC timebomb waiting to go off and cost you $$$ that you could have put into a reliable, fast VQ.

okay...I just did about half of the "squeak and rattle" TSB's and put in a little more tire pressure as they were a little low...car is nearly silent now!! can't wait to get my new ball joints, bushings, bearings, struts, dust boots, bump stops, and SFC's...then my car should feel like a luxury car, but handle like a sports car...!

Can you link me to someone having an engine failure due to ticking VTC sprockets? You don't have to fix or ground the VTC's if they are ticking. They are still fully functional if you don't mind the ticking. I'm at 167K miles, no signs of ticks

the VTC tick is way overplayed.
I have as of yet to see a single max driving around with it.

look, all maxima's are great...
I have personally had a 3rd gen and now a 4th gen and plan to have a 5th gen possibly...

I believe that every gen has it's weaknesses and strengths...in the end, it all balances out and the result is we are all driving deceptively fast, well built, high quality, high performance cars for the money!

anyone who claims any given generation of maxima's is a POS and does not deserve mad respect is not a true maxima owner or driver....plain and simple!

I love 3rd and 4ths the best, but I do respect 5th gens. The only thing I really dislike about 5th gens is the ugly @$$ and tail lights.

We're all family.
