bose problem

Ok, so I bought a used car with a bose sound system in it. It had one of those sony xplode heads in it and bose speakers. A little odd... Well we find out aparently you can't run the bose speakers on the sony head without burning out the sony head because the bose speakers are powered and send some of that power back to the head.

Is there any way around this? how much would a replacement bose head be? I wanna call em up but I figured I could come here first. Thanks for the help.

do you know of any good ways to test to make sure the speakers aren' hurt? I could probably sell the xplode to help get the bose unit, but it would suck if I got it, then found out the sony unit damaged the speakers. How would I know what unit to get?

are the bose....amazing speakers?

I have a 97 Bose HU in my car right now (sold my 95 Bose unit) with stock speakers and a Sony Xplod Sub. Got to say it sounds pretty amazing. Plus i'm not a fan of the look of aftermarket head units and stuff. I like to keep it looking stock

Well I didnt want the full range coming out of just the factory speakers. That would limit how loud I could turn it up before it would start sounding like crap. With The Sub and the stock stereo, you can turn off the bass going to the speakers. It sounds so d@mn good. And my Sub is only about 150 watts rms.

Yeah, I dont know why everybody hates on the factory Bose systems. With the sub I get a perfect balance of bass, mids, and highs.

wait, how do you turn off the bass going to the speakers, but still send it out to the sub? crossover?? If you can use a crossover that sends out singnal to all the speakers, wouldn't you be able to use that crossover with the sony HU?

^^^ On the front of the Bose there is a **** to adjust the bass. Adjust it almost all the way down so you cannot hear the bass coming from the speakers. Then on my amp there is a low range filter, so it only picks up the lows. BTW my sub signal comes from the same signal going to the rear speakers.

If you want to use the Sony headunit, you can bypass the bose amps. (there are 4 of them, one at each speaker.)

so you ran wires coming off of the speakers in the rear, into your amp, that goes to your sub?? If thats the case, then how is your sub getting the lows that you cut out from the head unit?

^^ The signal coming from the radio stays all the same until something changes it. When you turn the **** to lower the bass on the Bose HU, it is only telling the 4 small bose amps to lower the lows on the speakers.. I spliced the rear speaker cables BEFORE the signal goes into the rear speakers. So my sub is receving a completely unaltered signal. I could be totally wrong, but that is my theory.

I understand what your sayin now. It wouldn't work on normal speakers, but I guess since the bose speakers are powered that it would.

so any ideas on testing the speakers?

you can wire the sony to the bose speakers.... and bypass the amps.... I would use an amp to power the speakers........ here is the deal with Bose.... the factory speakers are .75ohm.... normal speakers are 4ohm..... the reduction in resistance lets the amp in the radio produce more power than it should and can cause it to fail.... kinda like putting 3" exhaust on a weedwacker... if you use a 1 or 2ohm stable amp you won't have a problem with burning out the amp or power supply.... and the stock speakers don't need much power... I am running mine with a 4x50watt and have it turned way down ...... the system in my 300ZX is running on a 4x25 and works fine also ....

look on the stickies, there should be a BOSE thing and it tells you how to hook the BOSE speakers up to an aftermarket hu. It wont cause any harm to anything if its done properly. its all relatively easy to do. pretty much, it cut out the bose amp and poweres it through the hu.
