tranny

i have read that putting a 2001 transmission in a 4th gen is better cuz they are stronger than the 4th gen auto trannys. my transmission may be on its way out, i dunno tho. but if anybody knows symptoms of a dying tranny that would help me out a lot. but if i was to put a 2001 auto tranny in my maxima, what other parts would i need to make it work? also, should i get a tranny with a locking differential or a non-locking differential? and if anybody who has done this can tell me about it (if they like it, pros and cons, etc) that would help me out a lot
thanks
