Gave up on my '96 and bought a '99

For the last 2 years or so, I have had a starting problem that I could not figure out. I brought it to 5 shops, including 2 Nissan dealerships, I tapped all the brains here at the .org, etc. No luck. The car comes so close to starting but has a heck of a hard time. Once it finally starts, it runs great. ??

Anyway, I gave up and last weekend I purchased a '99 SE. I love it. I now have all the things I wish I had on my '96. Outside temperature display, ABS, low miles, '97/'99 front/rear, etc. Of course I had to get pearl white on black leather again .

While I upgraded for the most part, I lost a few things. Ex. my fuzzy pillars are now plastic and my auto shifter is rubber instead of leather. And of course I'll lose some mods which won't transfer like the shaved keyhole, etc.

Due to being bummed I have not spent much time here so I am happy to be back and I am looking forward to getting back into the Maxima scene.

Although I hate it when people post pictures of stock cars, I'll break my own rule. Don't laugh at the wood, it came on there. I will remove it soon. Here you go:

Looks good to me. I am fine with the stock look. Hopefully the 99 won't give you such a hassle. We always tend to remember the good things about past car, not how much we got mad at them when things went wrong.

Very clean car. How many miles?

looks good man! did you trade your old max in for it or sell it privately? is that wood kit all stick on and howcome you don't like it?

i've been wanting to upgrade to a newer 4th gen but financially it's not really worth it to me. still thinking about it though because i keep adding everything to my 95 when i could have just bought a loaded one stock and saved my money or put it elsewhere.

goodluck with the new car and have fun with it!

Chief Brody: The miles are 78,000. I know I said 'low' and that is probably more like 'just average' but to me it is low when my '96 has 135k (and it would have waaaaay more if my starting problem never occured). I paid ~$8500 ($9200 out the door) from a Honda dealership. One owner trade-in.

Nismo3112 What were your symptoms Nismo?

Jeph: I still have the old Max. I will slowly start taking the mods that I can from the '96 and puting them on the '99. I'll eventually sell it I suppose. Or maybe keep it as a second car and sell the SHO. Yes the wood kit is stick-on. Why don't I like it? 1.) I have a wood kit on my GLE and I am kind of tired of it. I told myself my next car would be all black or perhaps aluminum. I like wood, just tired of it. 2.) For some reason I feel wood is a GLE thing, not an SE thing. It clashes with the white gauges.

Everyone else: Thanks for the kind words.

Long periods of starting (10-20 sec), once it turned over, it ran fine.

Uh, stay with us here fanatic - lol. I have a stick-on wood kit (mentioned several times) which is brown in color.

Also, the color of the interior leather does not determine the color of the center dash. GLEs get plastic (brown) woodgrain and GXEs and SEs get black.

I was talking about the actual dash not trim peices.
I had thought that the interior color determined what color the dash and and center console would be either black or brown. So How does that work out.

I have never seen a brown dash and center console in a car that did not have tan leather or tan cloth seats.Until yours.
Or black dash and center console in a car that had did not have black leather or charcoal seats.

I got you. Sorry. No, my dash is black. You are rights about everything you said about color combos. However, my dash is black. Look one more time. I think perhaps you think it is brown because it was a very sunny day and it may look washed out in the pics.

It is the 'AMB' (for 'ambiant') button in the middle of the bottom row of buttons on the electronic climate control.

No leather shifter? Thats a huge surprise to me. All SE models have a leather shifter. Maybe the previouse owner replaced it and cheaped out.

Looks great!

Really? Your '98 has a leather auto shifter JS? Either the prior owner changed it out (doubtful) or Nissan cut corners in '99 (more likely).

my 96 se auto has leather shift ****, my 98 is a 5 speed..still leather though. I swear that the GXE is the only model with a rubber shifter (and steering wheel), in either tranny. Its possible the original leather one got damaged and was replaced.

GLE's have the leather auto shifter, my SE has the rubber one. I'm looking to swap this out later on. There's also a thread for swapping an I30 shift lever into a max

didnt know 99s had that.

good find. Now no need for 97+ conversion. If i could buy a max again, I'd get the 97, so I'd have 194 guage bulbs, and the new trunk, and front end.

What do you mean by 194 guage bulbs?

the bulbs that light up the gauages (speedo rpms etc) is #194 a good bulb and illuminates very well but after the 97 year they switched to #74 which is ok, but if you replace with another colored #74 its not as bright (so I've been told)

but there is a conversion from #74 to #194 for 98-99 models.

I just would want to tinker around in my speedo too long incase I mess something. . . .

Nice ride man! You and I have the identical car! Mine is a 5 speed though. I have no wood, and I bought mine in July of 2004 with 98k on it from the original owner for $9,200. There isn't a mark on the car anywhere. Kinda like yours. Enjoy it!

Oh yeah, I forgot, I sold Nissan from 93-99, and the white on black WAS a very rare color combo. Everyone who was buying a Max from me, wanted the white on black and really had to look for it at other dealers. No one wanted the white on beige. uke:

If you are 22 now and you were selling cars in '93, you were selling cars at age 10???
