I need to know because I want to modify an ECU for my 98 5spd and I hope that the spare ecu is from a 96 SE 5spd"

Yeah no matter what you'll get a 0707 rear o2 code, because the 95-96's have a different sensor in the back than the 97+'s.
That Jim wolf page is inaccurate IMO. I went through this whole ECU part # thing a couple times.
For one, the A18 # is the manufacturer PN and cannot be traced back by nissan. Nissan uses a totall different #. There are two ways you can can be fairly certain of wether this ECU is from a 95 or 96 5spd. One would be to ask what model # the 95/96 5spd owners on the org have, but that would requre them to, at the very least get in their car and look by the diagnostic screw. The other way would be to go to www.car-parts.com and look at all the 4th gen ECU part #'s that are listed. A good majority of the ECU on their have the A18 # listed. If you find the model # you have listed for several different 98 auto's, or 97 5spd's then you know you don't have the right ECU. If you find your PN listed for several 95/96 5spd's then you know it is probably right.

I matched mine on www.car-part.com with the JWT.
Jim wolf can also tell you if your ECU is the correct year or not. I sent then an ECU that someone told me was a 96 5spd and they called me up a couple days later and said that the ECU was a 98 auto.
