cv boots are leaking (driver side) should i replace the whole shaft?

i found out that my cv boots are leaking on my driver side.....is it a good idea to just switch out the whole CV half shaft? i heard cv boots run $20-30 each so wouldnt it be a better choice to replace the shaft and the boots?

i called advance auto parts and they told me a REMANUFACTURED half shaft will cost me only $60 which includes new boots and everything

anyone esle has or have had this problem?

how hard is the install?

If it was me i would do the whole shaft, its not that hard. (i'm a person that only settles for the best way) Just look and read around for how-to's. Dont go the remanufactured route because at the shop that I work at we install remanufactured shafts and then once installed we take it for a test drive and half the time their bad so we have to get another.

I had the same problem last summer. I do a lot of my own work but Pep Boys did if for less than $200.00 - reman shaft. For that much, it's not worth doing yourself. IMHO.

WHAT!!!!
You could have saved about 140 bucks. Its really easy to replace the whole shaft rather than just the boot.

its best to just replace the whole shaft unless you dont mind doing all the work required to fix the boot.

Ya, you have to pull the shaft out to replace the boot. Might as well slap a whole new shaft w/ boots that as pre-greased.

$200?!? I found both brand-new shafts (not re-man.) at O'Rielly for $200 (110+90).
If you don't know how long it's been leaking, just replace the whole shaft.

Sorry, don't know if they have them on the Website. I just ordered them from the local O'Rielly auto parts store. If I have time, I'll check in my garage for the name brand on the axles.

if your boots are leaking, then theres a chance that junk might have gotten inside. its safer and cheaper to replace your shafts and boots at the same time. my boots were leaking so i only had those replaced.
