Timing Chain Maintainence

Hey,

I was talking to my local shop and got new tires and brake pads for my 98 GXE at 92k miles. The shop manager (a pretty decent guy) was recommending that around 110-120k I should have the timing chain replaced. I know generally most timing belts go to around 60-80k then the maintainence schedule recommends replacement, but I've never heard of any schedule recommending a chain replacement for any car. I have the Nissan shop manual and it is not in the recommended maintainance. Of course I know what happens when a belt goes screwey but was wondering what you guys thought about a timing chain replacement.

Thks for your thoughts

the timing chain shouldn't need to be replaced. from what i've read on here it is meant to last the life of the engine without any maintainance.

The chain itself should in fact last the life of the motor, but two things. First, over the long run, it may expand a little. Second, the timing chain's tensioner DOES go out on some people.

But no, the majority of people never have to replace the chain or its tensioner.

I know I have to change my chain's tensioner.

Maybe it was an honest mistake, but if the shop manager knew your car had a timing chain and not a belt, then I would never go back there again.

Thanks guys. My thoughts all around. I dont think this dude is an outrright liar. I just think he has begun to believe the mark***ing hype of his peers (like the oil change folks that classify everyone as severe driving and thus automatically "needing" oil changes every 3k).

Gracias for the opinions

For some reason a lot of service writers think timing chains should be replaced from time to time. I actually think my I30 owner's manual specifically states the car has a timing chain that should last the life of the engine and require no maintenance.

When I bought my car new I was told that the timing chain should last in excess of 300,000 miles. With only 56,700 miles on my 95 SE, I will be dead first, lol!

The chain will last the lifetime of the car... I know alot of car dealerships that dont even know we have timing chains, they assume VG's had them we have them too.
