Will new Knock Sensor get me better milage?
I have a '96 and have just over 110,000 miles. I have been getting some really horrible miles per gallon lately as compared to previous months. I'm assuming that the original Knock Sensor is on the car. How much does it cost to have KS changed professionally because I have the worst luck repairing stuff on my car?
And does anyone know of any national chains that do ECU checks for free? I think I heard one time that Pep Boys or Auto Zone will check for codes for free. Anyone else heard of this?
Any other ideas for bad mpg?
Thanks.

It could be the KS but the best way to check is by pulling the codes off of the ECU. The KS code (0304) does not set off the CEL. You will know when the KS is gone when you get that code from the ECU. Mine went out 2 weeks ago as soon as I noticed horrible gas mileage. Mine went down from 23 to 15.

if it is indeed the original knock sensor, theres a good chance that it is bad. it is somewhat difficult to install, but definetly doable. auto zone will check the codes for you for free so I would start there. check out this page on my site for things to do to improve MPG:

Sounds like you might need a new KS. Might want to check your O2 sensors as well as they can have a serious effect on acceleration & economy. Also check your tire pressures to make sure they're within spec
As for the free code check, Autozone does it for free
If you're looking to buy a new KS, check the group deals forum as there currently is a deal for a KS for just under $100

dude, its pretty easy. Just read the FAQs on it, motorvate i think, and the skippynet how-to. its not a breeze, but if u have the 12mm socket, a flex socket, 9" of extension, and a good light,ur good to go. may take 1 hr with problems.
as far as mileage...i just did my ks, at 70k mi, i was getting 18.5 mpg b4 i changed it, we'll see when i drive a few more miles what my mpgs age now.
u may wanna check ur o2 sensors.
and also, read the stickies man, it tells u how 2 check ur ecu (computer). it takes like, 3 minutes. REaALLY simple
