? regarding leaking cv boot grease

ok, so for a few months now i have noticed that the end of my boots closest to the engine are leaking that black grease

now they don't constantly leak but do spit out grease and it lands on my control arms, wheel wells, etc.

i'm wondering how long i can let this happen before i need regreasing

You should replace that axle. I wouldn't bother rebuilding the joint, as it's not much more $$ to replace the whole axle.

i am planning on replacing both axles eventually

but right now i don't want to shell out the dough and its pretty frigid out......but anyone have the prob of their joints spitting grease every now and then? because my boots are fine and haven't really experienced the signs of a failing axle

just wondering how long i have before this axle goes on me

Is there a tear in the boot? Where, exactly, is the grease coming from?

no the boots are fine, no tears at all

the grease is coming out of the beginning of the boot, where the shaft first enters the boot, closest to the engine/firewall

Is the clamp still on the boot? There isn't many places where grease can come from in that area. It's either a ripped boot or missing clamp.

it might be a missing clamp, because it is leaking out of the narrow part of the boot where it looks like the drive shaft is going into the boot

Is there a metal clamp on it? If not, go get one of those screw-to-tighten clamps from a hardware store and put it on...you may want to get some more grease in there for good measure.

it could be that the clamps on there have come loose over time

how would i go about throwing more grease in there?

If your low on grease inside the CV boot does that mean it'll create a whinning noise when it get's hot?

haven't heard any of that, i haven't really had any sounds to speak of.....i think i'll do the baster idea or if i can find a thick needle or something

but my boots are in healthy shape, grease just seems to be getting squeezed out at the far end where the shaft enters
