Does anyone know of a recommended time to change this part? The owners manual says nothing about it...

Replace the thermostat when it fails. That will probably never happen.

I wouldn't say never. I had to replace mine at 115k. No big deal though, $15 and about 30 minutes once I figured out where it was.

Thermostat failure

It is a 96 SE. It failed in the open position.

Me too I'm on my third. Always failing in the open position. The first 2 were under warranty. This one's on me. Did you have to drain from the left and right cylinder blocks, or were you able to get by just draining from the radiator? Any tips to pass on, since you just did it, would be apreciated. 95 108,000 and counting.
