My Max used to missfire(backfire) randomly. It got to be worse in the last couple of weeks and now the car is DEAD. Died on Superbowl Sunday, tried starting it but no luck. Actually I started it for about three seconds, and it died for good. Its a 99 Max with 100,000 miles, 5sp. PLZ HELP IF YOU CAN

MAF, crank postion sensor, cam position senor, NATS issue, Engine fuses. Start with these and go from there.

OR maybe you should check for codes.

Try replacing your fuel filter.

BTW, no need to make 2 threads about the same thing.

NATS issue

What do you mean? I checked the fuses and the sensors, no luck. No codes at this time. The original problem was that the car was misfiring, but it never told which coil. I had codes like: random misfire, knock sensor, running lean. Cleared them a while ago and they never came up again. Car started missfring more than ever lately and the CEI light just started blinking and now the car is completely DEAD.

Completely dead as in won't turn over? Or as in turns over, but won't start? When you try to start what does the security light do? If the CEL was blinking then there should be at least one code. You should have at least the KS code (if you haven't replaced it yet).

EDIT: NATS is the chip-in-key security feature in all 99+ maximas.

The security light stays lit solid. Is that ok?

Solid security light indicates NATS/NVIS problem. Try just unplugging your battery.

Disconnecting the battery most likely won't work. You'll need a consult or a locksmith with some expensive equipment. If the light is solid, then that's a NATS / NVIS problem. NATS stands for Nissan Anti-Theft System. NVIS stands for Nissan Vehicle Immobilzer System.

Yeah the light stays on, when I try to crank the engine. Do those chips go bed a lot? What happens to the car when you have a bad chip? I got mine started, it shut off after 5 seconds and that was it, does not run anmore. Is there any way you can bypass NVIS? Thanks.

Sometimes they just lose their memory. I've seen it quite a bit recently. There's no way to bypass it. You need to get your keys re-registered.

It would be nice to know what the problem was. I have a 95 and it ran 3 months ago. Went to start.it so I could drive it in the winter and all it does is crank over. I been searching and no luck.
