help with code 0407 (crankshaft position sensor)

hey so my check engine light has been on for a little while now and of course with it being cold, me being lazy, and the car feeling like it was fine i havent gotten around to checking it...

i did this morning and it came out 0407 which means

0407
Diagnostic Trouble Code 0407 indicates a malfunction was detected when...
A) 120 degree signal is not entered to ECM for the first few seconds during
engine cranking.
B) 120 degree signal is not entered to ECM during engine running.
C) 120 degree signal cycle excessively changes during engine running.

Possible causes...
- Harness or connectors
- Crankshaft Position Sensor (REF)
- Starter motor
- Starting system circuit

Perhaps a marginal starter would crank the engine at a non-uniform rate (fast-slow-fast-slow) and disrupt the normal rhythm of pulses from the CPS. This is consistent with the starter motor problems you have recently reported.

i am not having any problems starting the car even on really cold days so i dont think the starter is the cause... anyone have any info on this problem

also i never got a haynes manual before but im ordering one now... wasnt there an online version if anyone has that link could they please post it

thanks
danny

I have a Crankshaft Position Sensor (REF) available. I bought it and did not end up needing it. Brand new, in box. Let me know if you'll need it.

any hard starts or intermittent cranking will trip the CPS code. i had it before, because i had hard starts. turned out the CPS (POS) sensor was dirty instead of CPS (REF 0407) burned the starter out, then realized it wa sthe other sensor.

Yea just clean both crank sensors and make sure the wiring is plugged in tight. I had the wiring clip pop off one of mine and my car died right in the middle of the road. Thank god I knew how to pull the codes and have a manual, other wise woulda cost me hundreds of dollars to have a sensor plugged in.

So just try and figure out if you will end up needing the sensor replaced or not. If it comes down to it, yeah I have one. I don't think its going anywhere Just PM me if you end up needing it. Thanks
