what is this leak from my front left axle?

I have noticed a leak of some kind of liquid from my car. It only leaks after my car is warmed up and driven. The other day i noticed a decent sized puddle under my car after driving. I looked under my car, and I think it is coming from the axle. It is about 1-1.5 feet inside of the front left wheel. The puddle that I found was sort of clear with a mild brownish color. The puddle also had that colored design in it (typical of oil), but this isnt an oil leak cuz i konw what oil looks like. Any ideas of what this could be?

axles dont have oil in them, there is a thick greese that is in there but no oil like.

you most likely have a leak comming from somewhere else but is dripping down by the axle.

depending on how cold out it is, or if you have a garage, you could jack up the car, or just look underneath and see if you can see other wet spots under the car.

what kind of fluid is this?

I have a thick clear fluid leaking from underneath my car. It is about 2 feet in from my front left tire. Any ideas of what it could be? Could it possible be gear oil for my tranny? I know 97 MAx's often have that problem with the bearings and it is expensive and a ***** to fix...i hope its not that, but is this maybe a tell tale sign of it? Please let me know what u think it may be.

That's probably the driver side axle seal, which in turn means your tranny is on its way out. Sorry

its a clear fluid with a mild mild brownish tint to it. It is thicker than water. After reading FAQ's and other threads, i think that it may be my bearings dying. What do you guys think?

Could be brake fluid.

Why not throw the car up on some ramps and look up to see where the mess is coming from ?

On the brake fluid. Or if you have a manual maybe clutch fluid. I always thought transmission fluid was supposed to be red.

Brake fluid is certainly not thick. It is probably gear oil coming from a worn shaft seal.

the puddle's have been varying in size...depending on how long it sat for. Most of them were 4-8 inches in diamater. The biggest puddle was maybe 1 foot in diamater after my car sat for about 2 days. ill take pix tomw and post em

I have no idea what trans you have. Telling us that would be a smart thing to do. Auto fluid is pink/red, manual fluid is very light brown/clear. Brake fluid is also similar to that.

i have a 97 SE 5 speed with 70k miles. Would loss of brake fluid cause a squeeking sound? (almost like the brakes need to be replaced). I just had new brake pads put on, so i know its not my brake pads...but would loss the fluid cause the noise?

just get under that car, open the tranny fluid filling hole, stick your finger inside, and see if the liquid(tranny fluid) is about level with the opening. if it's level then probly something else.

^Wouldn't raising the car be pointless then? You can access the fill hole just as easily from the top.
