Phantom Grip LSD
Phantom Grip LSD
Hi, I was wondering what you guys opinions are on the Phantom Grip LSD. It's not a true LSD, it only costs around $300, but says it will convert your stock diffy into an LSD. Anyone have this? How well does it work? I hope this isnt one of those products where "you get what you pay for" Thanks.
i dont know anyone on the org who has tried it, but everyone says its junk ! i want a lsd too and have thought about this one, but never made a move. i have talked with phantom grip, they say its good, and will help you in the 1/4 mile.
someone needs to just take on the whole project and test it out, we are hurting for lsd or some variation of that, lol !

hm... never heard of this product, I wouldn't bother getting it for an automatic unless you get a high stall rate TC. Stick shifts on the other hand with a good amount of power would make the tires spin, and keep chirping at each shift so LSD would be great for them so that their tires never spin and keep the tires stuck on the pavement.
The design is similar to a locker, but it doesnt click (release) since it is not 2 separate halves. Now this means that both tires will either spin at the same rate during a turn, which will make the inside wheel spin too fast, or the PG LSD and the spider gears will rub/slip possibly wearing something out.
I have a freind who swears by these and installs them in every tranny he can. While I have not acctually compared 60' times before and after the install, I'm pretty sure they have not betten their previous best 60' times. This race season I should have some good evidence to prove or disprove these LSD's.
The Vitek LSD looks like a regular dif with a Phantom grip installed.

I have had the Phantom Grip LSD on my car for about 5,000 miles now. Upon installation, I replaced all the bearings and cryotreated everything. I haven't been to the track since the install, but I can attest that I can make both tires scream and smoke on demand . The only minor problem, if any, is that this "limited" slip ocassionally locks the wheels a la 4X4 style. When making a shart turn, you can hear the inner wheel spin/hop a bit (like a locker) Other than that, its all good.
I should be going to the track within the next couple of weeks, I'll let you know how well it holds on some drag rubber and a good dose of juice off the line.

Look for an OEM LSD. Either Infiniti I30 or some Canadian maximas (like mine) had that as an option since 1995. 2001 20th anniversary 5-speeds will also fit. Quaife is 1400$US, so a used OEM LSD would be the way to go, if you can find one.
My 60' are no better than you US guys. Stock 60' was 2.26 on Toyo Ultra 800. Maybe it's because I suck as a driver, or because of the tires, but it's definately not the track, which is quite fast. What it does, however is improve handling, for some inexplicable d*mn reason. At least compared to my mom's 94 VG, which supposedly has a better rear suspension, but I can take curves much faster than I would dream of with her car.
It might benefit you at the track if you're putting down alot of power, but I couldn't pull anything better than 2.26 on the 800s. I only went to the track twice though, 11 runs total.

I'd go w/oem lsd if I knew it wasnt abused. The LSD in my 93 Max 5sp isn't so hot anymore, and it's not cuz it was abused. 240k miles will wear lsd a lil.
I like the idea of Phantom... cheap price, and can swap out for another one if it dies. Compared to the price of a Quaife, you can get about 4 of them for the same price, and change them out every couple years. Unless you break something else in your tranny.
