My Tach is going crazy! HELP!

96 SE 5 speed

Out of no where my tachometer goes crazy at 2,600 RPMs. When I hit 2600 the needle jumps all over the place, like it is playing pinball. but as soon as I rev to 2700 RPMs or drop below 2600 everything returns to normal. It does not seem that anything else is affected.

It is not a big deal because it is not doing any harm but I was wondering if anyone has heard of this before and what caused it?

I was all scare! the next morning I tryed to turn on my car and the batery was dead........ so I replaced my battery and everything came to normal now......

Same thing was happening when I bought my car. When the RPM's reached 2500 it bounced all over the place but after the car reved past 3800 it went back to normal. I ended up buying a cluster on ebay and swapping out the tach. I haven't had a problem since.

I'm just going to throw this on the table: It could be the alternator. I had a problem similar to this with my old 89 Ford pickup. We had to give another car a jump and my dad accidentally crossed the cables (bad eyesight). So stuff sparked and whatnot, and when it was all said and done I noticed that my tach went the opposite direction when I accelerated. We took it to the mechanic and he said something about 'reversed polarity' or something. This was maybe 2-3 years ago so I'm real fuzzy on the whole thing. Again, it's two different vehicles and two fairly different situations. It's a possibility though...

I'm could just be wayyy out there on another planet too, I'm extremely tired.
