Axles Need Changing

How do I know if my car has a Limited slip or not for an axle? I own a 96 Maxima and was built in 12/95.

You read the FAQ, otherwise you get flamed for being an IGNORANT human being.

I have read those things inside and out 50 times! I understand that I risk a chance being ridiculed. I am willing to take the risk. I was even on the Nissan's official site.

I wondered that, and advance auto parts lists the axles for my 97 SE as with Limited slip, so I'm thinking I have one I know our manual trannies do not, but apparently the axle does!

Anyone think that might be an I30 or interchange part?

You dont have one, only SOME I30 5 speeds and SOME Canadian ES's brought limited slip.

When I replace the axle, does the whole thing just slip out basically? I am looking in the stickies for instructions but don't see anything. I see stuff for CV boots and joints but nothing specifically on the axle. Wait...let me check on autozone.com.

How does that tie into the transmission? I mean, I know that, I believe, pre 01 maxima 5 speeds do not have a limited slip differential, and yet I see a lot of axles on advanceauto parts for my 97 that do have one (and some without).

I have a 96 auto GLE and have done both sides.I have ABS.It's not that hard to change the left side. The right side you gotta take off 4 bolts that are in the center of the shaft. If the axle doesn't come out, hammer a gap between the brackets with a screwdriver. After a while you get the idea of opening the gap and it should come out.Sand the bracket and grease it before installing the new one.

raxles.com wants $120/150 left/right. No core charge. That's shipped, for new axles. That's a good price, but it seems advance auto parts has remanufactured ones for about half that, though with a $40 core charge. I guess that $40 you get back when you give the old core, right...? Is it really worth paying twice just for a new part?

I'm not sure I'd want to go with a reman axle from advance or any of the auto stores, althougth I'm sure you'll get some type of a warrante I dont know, I bought a started from advanced, which I think it was refurb or new but has a lifetime warantee, it went bad about 5 months later and I had to swap out for another one. Now thats an easy job for a starter, but if for an axle it a bit lengthier of a job plus another alignment would be needed. I'd try for a new one.

I just finished the motorvate write up and was "distressed" to see recommendation of an alignment. The feeling is especially painful to me considering I just got an alignment with new tires about two weeks ago, and now I see that to do this I need to get another alignment - and they're about $60/pop! Is it really that crucial? At the very least I suppose I could repair my driver side boot if I'm going to replace my passenger axle, but damn I wish I'd done this prior to the new tires and save $60 off it.

I've no qualms about doing this myself, but what does Nissan/other mechanic charge for a new axle or repacked joint w/ new boot?

Nice how was it? easier than you thought?

that suck about the alignment, you know how your suppost to get an alignment after lowering some never did it, so you could go without it, but you may have un ever wear on your tires even if you steering is straigh as an arrow.

If you took to a dealer or other mechanic I'm sure they'd recommend or try to press for you to get a new axles vs rebuilding one.

Because when they are rebuilt they are sent to different companies that rebuild them. Most auto parts stores will stock them but yet not know they dont sell much. THey just figure, Maxima.. Popular car.. it will sell. Thats why you have so many stacked up...

I30 and Maxima axles are the same so they will use the same part #
