My Max is dead!
My Max(95 GXE 211,000)just died on me
. I'm pretty sure it's the alternator and with the other problems I had recently, I don't think I should try to fix it. I'm looking at a 98 I30t with 82,000 miles. What do you think I should do? Fix the Max or go for the Infiniti?

go for the infiniti - thats just too many miles to be worth fixing cause somethings gonna happen again soon if you do anyway. no doubt maximas last awhile but when they die w/ that mileage it will become nothing but a money pit IMO.

If the car is worth at least $2k, which I'm sure it is, why not put in a grand so that you can sell it? Really, that makes sense, eh?
The way I see it:
car not fixed = you get NOTHING
car fixed = you get $2000 - $1000 = $1000
i couldnt disagree more but i respect your opinion. his question was (from my interpretation ) fix and drive it or just buy the infiniti - not fix it and sell it. i think it really depends on the cost of fixing it, but as im sure we all know cars are not a cheap hobby. not to mention the fact that if he has already modded it that substantially decreases its value. but from the given information my opinion stands.
and who are you to say that i have very bad advice - have a little respect, it goes a long way

fixin max = couple hundred bucks, buyin I30 = quite a few grand. unless theres a lot more problems with the max why not just fix it. alternator will only cost 2-300 bucks, unless your just in the car new car mood and dont feel like dealin with the old max. either way 211k miles aint bad.
good points - i think the extent of the repairs being the best one. although buying the infiniti maybe be more, it also has way less miles which, all things being equal, would be more in his favor IMO.
I agree that fixing up the old Max would give more benefits than just buying an I30. You'll have the max on your hand and now an I30 to pay for and most likely mod aslo.
what exactly is wrong with the max? besides the alternator. You could part out the car and buy the I30, but you'd have a stripped max in your drive way.
I'd fix the Max and sell for what you can get and then buy the I30.

The alternator is pretty cheap replacement from autozone for about 170 bucks plus the core charge which you get back anyways. I would fix that and then not knowing what else is wrong at least get that done if it is reasonable and then sell it. That way you at least get the money you deserve. 211,000 isn't really a ton of miles but if you do want the I30 I woudl at least fix it so you get the needed money.
I should have been more specific about my Max. Alright, here goes: It is bone stock, it has a light hit in the passenger rear, the front suspension is held together by twine and luck, the tranny is starting to slip a little, the drivers seat is broken(the cushion lifts up), it's in dire need of a tune up and I spent $1500 4 months ago to replace the timing chain, water pump and radiator(I still had faith then). I love my Max, having gotten me to Virginia, Atlantic City more times than I can remember, Poconos and just about everywhere inbetween. I wish I was able to part it out, but having no driveway to keep it in nixes that idea. The Infiniti, on the other hand, just needs a starter(which the dealer says he will replace if I buy the car) and some body work done on the passenger side front and rear fenders(nothing too noticeable). Still, I'm torn between fixing my Max or buying this Infiniti. I got a quote of $3600
for the rear end damage, $1000 for the front suspension, however much the alternator would be.......................it just does'nt seem worth it. What would you do?

considering all that you have just said i stick by my previous statement even more. the money that you put into it wont be worth what you get when its fixed in the long run. Thats my humble opinion - good luck w/ whatever you do.

What would you do?If i were in your shoes I'd fix the Max and either buy the infinity or stick with that Max, all the necesarry repairs would be done so that car would be back in its prime, or just buy a lower milage Max, there easy to find.
I would, fix that Max and either drive it or sell it, of course suspension would be $1000 from the dealer but ask anyone of us on here that did their own suspension or even took it to a small shop $500 is the most you'll spend from new springs/struts to intall and alignment. Rear end damage Depending on how bad or wheater you want to fix I'd leave it along, I'd get all the mechanical working great again cause someone would buy a car with a little body damage, but if its not mechanically sounds then its a problem.
www.car-part.com has some trannies for a good price. Its a tricky situation it just depends on wheather you want to make alittle money off that car or just lose out on it completely.
Or you could just sell it as is as a part car, put it up on ebay with a reserve of $1K.
good luck
