Emmisions failed because OBD not ready.
Hi,
My first post here. I recently purchased a 97 Maxima GXE from a private party. It failed NJ emmisions because the OBD was not ready. Emissions inspector suggested that I drive for about 300Miles to reset the OBD. I drove it for about 500 Miles and and went for emissions and it again failed for the same problem.
Right now I am having a ECU falt code for bad knock sensor. I am trying to get a hold of Nissan TSB#98-018C without success. It has info on OBD II - System Readiness Test (SRT) Drive Patterns. Can anyone help me with how to reset the OBD? Thanks.

That being said, the ODB-II tester from the state does differentiate if it is failing for a reason (i.e., the knock sensor) or just because the ECU isn't ready for the test.
I don't know what to do to make it ready, just wanted to point out that the KS code doesn't mean you fail the inspection.. and because the shop said you failed because the ECU wasn't "ready" -- that just reinforces that point.

I am with Stupid.......make sure the ECU is reset properly andf no code is in their.....it works the same way in NY now.....i do inspections and happens all the time either people dont realize they SEL light is on or they fix it and bring it in the same day

500 miles should be plenty to "ready" the ECU... just as long as you haven't disconnected the battery or done a manual reset during that time frame. If you haven't done either of those things, could be a bad odb plug or ecu. Also, try taking it to a different inspector. One place i went to tried to tell me I had problems because he couldn't get a reading. I left and went for a second opinion half a mile down the road; passed just fine.

i cleared my ECU for a bad evap and drove 50 miles and passed ! right after the CE came back on. It doesnt take that long...you must have cleared that thing right as you pulled up
I just re-read your message check to see that the ecu not in safe mode and that the screw is turned all the way counterclockwise, If its in between the Ecu will read not ready.
