is my idle too low?
is my idle too low?
i just got a 97 gxe and i was at a stop light when i felt a weird shutter. i looked at my tach it was idling below one. it was at about 1/2. is that bad? please let me know what might be wrong and what can i do. thanks
Yes, it's low. It should be at about 750 RPMs. You might need to clean your throttle body and Idle Air Control Valve (IACV). Check the stickes on how do them, it's relatively easy.
Speaking of which... I need to do this tomorrow as well. Mine got down to 400 today!

i like mine high too it feels more smooth. i drive 5spd and mines 650. not high but i dont mind if i have the AC on and its around 8-900.
TB and IACV cleaning made a huge diffrence, and my TB wasnt even dirty atall. so im guessing it was mostly the IACV bieng clean that made the diff. if they wher both dirty i would have shat myself after cleaning them. the improvements are huge

I bumped mine up a few years ago and never touched it since. I'm not even sure exactly where it is, but it's also difficult to get down to 50-99 rpm with the tach anyway. Seems like with the Max when the idle is set to spec, if you turn on your high beams and rear defrost, the motor is a touch on the rough side.
But as far as having the idle set really high like over 1000, that does waste fuel. I had a Volvo with Bosch mechanical K-Jet that idled high in the cold--got under 15 mpg in the winter, and around 19-20 in the summer as a result.

According to the service manual idle speed is as follows:
1995
Manual tranny 550 - 650 RPM's
Auto tranny 600 - 700 RPM's
1996 - 1999
Manual tranny 525 - 625 RPM's
Auto tranny 600 - 700 RPM's
Idle speed specs are with no load (lights heater a/c ect OFF) manual in neutral auto's in D

I unplugged the two plugs going to the TPS and managed to adjust the idle but I find it doesn't adjust the idle while engaged in Drive or Reverse. My idle still drops below 750rpm while in either of those 2 positions.

If you have an automatic it's especially not good to idle to high, it's slighly more of a shock and it may cause increased tranny wear over time.
