Funny grinding-type noise on start up

When I start the car up it makes a funny noise kinda like something smacking into the fan or something. Almost like a grinding sound. It's hard to explain, but it's only on start up, and never makes the noise any other time, and it only lasts for less than a second.

Could it possibly be the starter making a noise like that? What kind of things could I do to trouble shoot and maybe pin-point closer to what the hell that noise is? I've started to have problems starting it (it will take a few seconds to start up instead of starting immediately).

i think its the starter whinning.......you can always regrease it or just replace

funny, when i bought my max the starter would whine on cold starts but now i've had it for a year now and the starter hasn't whined in a long time, now that i think about it

but basically, it isn't going to affect your car; unless it totally gives out

Sounds like the gears of the starter are a little out of wack. Give it a little tap with a hammer.

I'm bringing it on Friday to have the "teeth" on the started greased -- they said that noise could be from that. Thank you for your help, without it, I would have been buying a new starter instead of paying the $20 for the new coat of grease
