Tranny rebuild

i have a horrible whining/grinding noise when i shift through the first 3 gears, and when the stick is in neutral and its getting louder everyday. mechanic told me throw out bearing, and an .orger said gear bearings which would mean a rebuild. anyone done a rebuild or experienced the same problem?? and if so point me in the right direction to take.
thanks

1998 se 5spd.

the best is to change all 6 bearings in the tranny 2input shaft;2main and 2on the diff.
i reuse the old shims if the bearings are not blue if blue u have to reshim if you do not have a press and a service manual it is best to have a tranny shop do it

I was having some noise from my gearbox. It finally got stuck in 1st so I got a newer gearbox to replace it. When I pulled the gearbox off, I found that the throw out bearing was causing a lot of the noise that I was hearing. It sounded like a dried out bearing off a k-mart skateboard.

Now I am just waiting for my clutch to arrive so I can put it all back together.

I had the same problems. Then I was no longer able to shift into 1st or 2nd. THe noise got way louder over the weekend. I dropped it off at the shop yesterday, and they quoted me $1300. I just hope it lasts a while after this rebuild. I can't believe the trans is sh&tting on me at 85k.
