Throttle Body Cleaning

I know there have been umpteen threads on throttle body cleaning, but please don't flame me.

I spoke to a stealership about a month ago about throttle body cleaning and they said they never do it. They recommended the BG two-step fuel additive process every 15,000 miles.

Motorvate.ca has an extensive write-up on TB cleaning.

Having recently bought a Haynes manual covering 1993 - 2001 years, I quote section 4-9: "The throttle body on these models is coated with a sludge-resistant material designed to protect the bore and throttle plate. Do not attempt to clean the interior of the throttle body with carburetor or other spray cleaners. This throttle body is designed to resist sludge accumulation and cleaning may impair the performance of the engine."

Has anyone suffered any adverse performance effects after cleaning the throttle body?

What do you make of all this?

A few points.

1.) Sludge does build up on there.
2.) I've been cleaning mine to no harmful affects for the last 140k.
3.) The haynes also states to take off the IM when doing the KS ...
4.) The dealership wants your money so they can do that process.

I didn't mean the TB cleaning from the delaership, I meant the BG stuff they mentioned to you.

I'd do it if I were you. NmexMax is right, there are people that have been doing this for thousands of miles and have not had any decrease in performance. Clean that shizzle up!

I'm sure one way or another, the dealership might tell you that they don't do one thing, just to sell you on another. After reading the write up on motorvate, you can easily see that carbon and other crap DOES build up there, so no matter what the manual or the dealership state, you can see what is a fact and what is on paper. I personally have cleaned my tb twice, and both times I can tell a difference. It basically comes down to what you think is best for your car, and who you believe...Just keep in mind...We aren't trying to get your money...the dealer is.

I may be rising to the bait now. If I clean the TB I might as well clean the IACV while I'm at it. The car has 57,400 mostly highway miles on it and runs perfectly. It still has the original plugs and idles bang on about 650. I also get better fuel economy then virtually anyone I have seen on the .org. So should I leave well enough alone for the time being? I am not planning on going to the stealer for the 60,000 mile maintenance.

In the past 10 months in reverse chronological order the following have been changed:
radiator flush, power steering flush, fuel additive, oil change, transaxle gear oil, brake flush. Next on the list: change clutch fluid.

Might as well do the IACV, as this should be incldued in the TB cleaning. If your profile is correct, then that's amazing, a 95 with only 57k miles, simply fantastic. I would change the plugs also, they have been in there for ten years if your profile is correct.

Thanks, yes the mileage is correct. I have owned the car since October 1, 1994 - ordered it loaded, Diamond coated, rustproofed and leather protected before taking delivery. The car is mint. I pay to get it detailed annually and you could eat off the engine. I still have 40 to 50% left on the original brake pads and am still running the OEM Goodyear Eagle RSAs, with a few K left on them. I don't use the brakes, lol! Only mods are: Budget y-pipe, K&N panel air filter, Vibrant FSTB. Next up new BF Goodrich Traction TAs and an RSB.

I was thinking on leaving the plugs in past 60 K, say until 65, but since they have been in there for 10-1/2 years you're probably right, give them the hook too!

No reason not to do the plugs while ur at it. Its east as long as you have a 10" extension for your socket. I did my plugs in about 20 minutes, 10 of which was gapping the plugs. Put some anti seize on the threads, and you are all set for another 60k. I went with NGK platinums, which just about everyone on this site will suggest. Try sparkplugs.com for descent prices.

My TB was pretty scummed up from 110K so I chose to use TB cleaner, which really did improve idle smoothness and response etc, if using the cleaners does indeed remove a film (which I doubt) I'm not concerned as I can just clean it again which I have, but I would also high recommend cleaning (used TB cleaner) the IAC valve, my idle is soooo smoooooth now and my idle drops properly again when coming to a stop, very worthwhile!

Thanks, I'm inclined to go with the platinums rather than the coppers. Buy why bother gapping them, don't the platinums come pre-gapped? Or do you double check them?

Double checking them is a good practice, but I never have had any problems with the coppers or the platinums in relation to gapping.

Well, most people that I see on here have said that they come pre gapped, but I spent the extra 2 bucks and bought a gap guage just to be sure. It may be during shipping or what not, but a few of them were under gapped and needed to be adjusted.
