Balljoints gone BaD!

i was changing the front bearings and right axle when i noticed how ripped and destroyed my balljoint are. the guy at the shop said you can't R&R them, i have to get the whole control arm. is that true? cuz they sell the balljoints separately on ebay...

Yes they are sold separately and yes you can take them off the control arm. All they have holding them is a pin... You can pound them out.. You dont need any special tools and it doesnt require torching or anything like that.

To make it easier get a ball joint separator tool, or picklefork, it looks like a gigantic 2 prong fork, makes it so much easier.

went to a machine shop today and had them pressed out and the new ones pressed in... that was the only way those were going to come out - with a 40 ton press. i put the right side together and here is the trick, i dont know if it's defective or not. the stabilizer link has like a miniature balljoint that connects to the control arm, and when i try to put the nut on and tighten it, the whole threaded rod spins with the ball inside the link. same exact thing happened with the control arm balljoint. that was a nice bday present. any suggestions?
i am going to take everything back to the shop and see what they have to say.

Funny that you would have this problem, as I just had to tackle the same thing today. For one, you should order yourself a new stabilizer link, and two new bushings. Once you get a new one, you will have to use a 12mm box wrench to hold the vertical section of the link in place, while you take the top nut off. For the horizontal section, there should be a nut on the link that is closer to the engine, you will need either a 9/16 or 7/16 box wrench to hold this part in place, while you take the nut off of that section. If you get lucky, that will be the end of your day. If you have corrosion issues like I did, and since you are in CT, i wont be surprised if you do, you will have to go the extra step. While I was trying to take the nut off of the vertical section of the link, the entire rod snapped, and I was left with just that little round ball section of the link. I had to use vice grips to hold the ball in place, while I took the nut off. make sure you spray the heck out of the nuts with pb blaster or penetrating oil before you try this out. I was surprised that the clunking noise that I had been hearing previously went away once I replaced that part. I thought I was going to have to replace the entire control arm, but it turned out that the noise I was hearing was the ball in the stabilizer link clunking against the control arm. Good luck.

yeah, weather def does not help. but my old parts came off easily, surprisingly. it's the new aftermarket link that had the ball spinning so i could not tighten it. i went back and got another one. what happened with the balljoint was the guy pressing it into the control arm pressed the threaded rod against solid iron brick. that's why i couldnt get the nut on. but they replaced that too. now i have new balljoints, new links, new right axle, and new rotors.
