'98 Maxima CD player QUIT - Clarion CD AM/FM Cassette

Has anyone had the similar experience of having their BOSE
system fail on the CD player? I was told by BOSE that the CD AM/FM cassette console is actually made by Clarion, and badged as a Bose unit, although the speakers and other components are BOSE made. My CD player was working just fine one minute, and then it quit reading right in the middle of a song. It loads and unloads CD's fine, and you can hear that the laser head still has power, but it doesn't read. My car is 40 months old, and Nissan has dodged helping me, other than to give a # for a local service shop. Repair is $200, to replace console unit. Local repair told me they have these units in stock. If they stock them and it's only used for this car, how many have failed on people? Please email if you have any information I can use, as I don't feel that I should have to pay for a repair on a unit that's a manufacturer failure. Nissan and the local repair shop seem very familiar with the problem, and report that the laser head no longer reads. Going through the channels, it really seems to me that Nissan and BOSE have been through this many times before, as their answers are very rehearsed and measured, and they're all quick to give you another phone number. I'd appreciate any information, as I'm going to address this with Nissan's consumer affairs department and any relevant data would be helpful. Thanks.
