as for the running car myth... i think shutting off your car is a requirement in some states due to the fact that their inspection standards do not require you to upgrade your fuel delivery system, because the old system did not have fuel feedback prevention. instead of putting a sign that says "vehicles made before 1980 shut engine off" they put one saying "shut engine off". i leave mine running when it is cold outside so i can jump back inside... when it is warm or i am going inside the station i turn the car off. fueling your car with the engine running does not cause explosions, unless sufficient amount of fuel vapor builds up around your engine where things like alternator and compressors may create a large enough spark to ignite the vapor. there is nothing in your fuel tank that will cause the explosion. fuel goes through a lot of valves, a pump, a filter, and injectors in order for the spark to reach the fuel vapors created by .... fueling your car???? that makes no sense. and the whole idea about losing pressure in your fuel tank is retarded. if you examine your fuel cap, it is a basic valve so that air may enter the fuel tank. when you open it, you are doing your fuel tank a favor. think about basic fluid dynamics. fuel goes to the engine - space is emptied in the tank - something is needed to refill it. that is why when you unscrew it, air is always sucked in.
the only thing i am really worried about is the static electricity when you touch your car.. but when i open my door, i always touch the metal frame and all static electricity built up from the cloth interior and my sneakers on the carpet is gone.
just dont smoke and refuel, that is pathetic.

well put my friend! you sound like an engineer. except for the pcb coating/sealing. i was just thinking that electrical shorts (im not talking about switches) in a cell phones or any modern electronic device, are very rare! sparks from shorts are due to electrical failures, and even then i dont think its enough to ignite gasoline vapors, even if your phone was next to the pump handle! just my 2 cents

There is no extra danger leaving the engine running other than you will be using more gas and wearing the engine down at idle. It used to be no one turned their cars off at the gas statiion. You would pull up someone would fill your tank and ask if you wanted your fluids checked and then you would turn off your engine.
Now when you go to say a Sams Club gas station you see a line of vehicles all with their car running in long lines until they get to the gas pump and then they shut off their car.
In North Dakota we left the cars running all the time except when we were sleeping or when we are going to be somewhere for long periods of time.

i dont know why u cant just turn the key off. fuel up and turn it on take mabye 3 seconds more. if your really in that much of a hury get less gas.... or if its to hot its not like if you keep your doors closed its not gunna stay cool for a few minetes or if its cold either way

Well I read in the owners manual that if you expect to leave the vehicle for more than 1 minute you should turn the motor off for better fuel economy. My dad has pulled the pump out 2 times! He has his mind on bigger things!
