Gas tank will only take 17 gals. why?

Our cars are supposed to hold 18.5 gallons of gas, yet mine fills up at around 17 gallons. Why is this the case? Or is this common?

Get rid of your muffler. Your muffler takes up space against your fuel tank. lol

Because they don't hold 18.5 gallons. My manual states 18.5 US gallons or 70 litres. I ran out of gas once and filled the tank up to the point where gas spilled out of the top of the tank on to the side of the car and all it would hold was 67.0 litres or 17.7 US gallons. I would like to know of anyone who has put more gas in their tank than that.

The other 1.5 gallons needs to be force fit into the tank. Just use a bigger hammer.

The reason your gas tank only takes 17 gallons is because there needs to be 1.5 gallons of space left for the blinker fluid, otherwise your directionals will not work.

Come on guys, everybody should know that.

Its becuase your tank is dirty pour some bleach, milk, and eggs in the tank and that should clean it enough to fit 20 gals if your lucky.

This is the funniest thread I've ever seen.

You're probably holding the nozzle at the wrong angle and cutting off 1.5 gallons of flow...

To fit the rest in I guess you have to shake the car a few times like a milkshake.

I think you need a new motor, mine takes 19gallons fine, if you replace the motor you will be able to take up that much.

You might need a new tranny too.. Smaller one perhaps for more space for the gas.

to fix that problem...all you have to do is take a handercheif and put it in your gas tank(where you put the nozzle) lit it on fire...and run. it should flush out anything that should be in there

You guys are all totally wrong. Anyone who knows anything knows that premium gas molecules are significantly larger than regular gas molecules, hence the same amount of molecules fills up more space in the tank.

Second of all, you need to utilize seafoam in order to know the full potential of your gas tank.

Nealoc 187 is on the right track. If you use 87 octane the gas fits better because of the smaller molecules and you can fit more in. You know its like a pound of feathers vs a pound of lead. Obviously the feathers weigh less. The same principle applies to gas.

you need to aerate your fuel system. drill several small holes in the bottom of the tank, then cover the holes with duct tape. if this doesn't work, try filling up entirely with seafoam. It worked for me

Premium gas pumps are much more powerful than regular gas pumps (you do use premium, don't you) and the pump accelerates some gas particles past the speed of light and your gas ends up going back in time. So no matter what, you can never fill your tank with 18.5 gallons because a certain percentage of your gas will be a few minutes back in time.

There's a TSB for this. Check FAQs.

some real sarcasm, huh?
i topped 17.3 gallons max. dunno about 18.5, but 17.3 already scared me to death. i ain't wanna stop on the side of the road waitin for someone to lend me some gas.

please don't try to run out your gas then pump it just to see how much it holds. it's really a stupid idea. dirt from the bottom of the tank will run into the system. change your fuel filter if you ever done that...

I agree when you say "i ain't wanna stop on the side of the road waitin for someone to lend me some gas." No truer words have ever been spoken, lol!

Now just how would you go about borrowing that gas? I suggest using a Mexican credit card.

Does anyone else have any suggestions on how to borrow that gas?
