It wasn't easy, it took me about 45 minutes, but it was my first time doing it, too.. The hardest part was getting all the pressure out of the hoses. Those damn things are SO hard to pull off - it's almost comical. Check out the write-up on motorvate.ca

I get around 18MPG, but I put 89 octane, gas down here in FL is skyhigh, I've notice that compare to others im low, so im going to look around and make some little changes see what I come up with, and Maximakid17 I agree...

Read about detonation because that's all you'll get from using anything below 91 octane. Your engine won't last as long. Its in the stickies.

When I bought my 99 Maxima from out of town it took 2 days to drive it back. On the second day going home I was able to drive 440 miles on one tank of gas (91 Octane). That was going a fairly steady 60 miles per hour, and the highway is pretty hilly/curvy so I guess I did pretty good. I think I'll look into those mods cause I hear the price of oil has hit a new high, and gas prices are always ridiculous here. I usually pay $50 Cdn. to fill her up from about 1/4 tank with 91 Octane and it's getting too expensive!

I use 93 octane (with ethanol) all of the time and I'm doing well when I get 21 MPG. Maybe it's time for new coils, I've got 155k on my '99 5-spd Maxima.

I doubt the stealership would be willing to install a ZX filter in a Maxima. Read the write-up on motorvate.ca and see if you'd be willing to do it yourself.

I think there's more than just a filter change that you'll need to do to get your MPG out. 16 miles to a gallon is unacceptable for me.

Maybe 30 minutes labor, about $45 at least. I replace mine myself with a Nissan original size filter, took me about an hour for the first time and some bleeding on my hands and arms, but I got a big smile after done because save some money. Next time will try the 300zx bigger fuel filter; I didn't get it this time as per guys at Nissan dealer parts started laughing at me when asked them if I was able to use that one of instead of original size.

You cant just check if a fuel filter is clean by looking at it.

To see if your fuel filter is still good you need to remove it and empty remaining gas into a clear plastic cup to see how much dirt comes out.
You might be talking about air filter?

Still averaging about 25.8 mpg with city/highway driving getting over 430 miles before refill with some reserve. And have done the 530 miles on a tank.

Biggest factors are quality of gas (ethanol or not), tire pressure and tread pattern, road condition, and finally cross winds.

My 95 got great mileage compared to my 99. Mind you, my 99 Max has heated leather sets, sunroof, auto-climate, and a Bose stereo that I usually have cranked.

well i see no one from nyc is saying anything thats because our mpg is the worst.....there is no such thing as highway in nyc..lol and i can't get more than 200-50 miles on a full tank....and my car was hooked up to a oem computer...not some ordinary odb-2....this computer test the voltage on all the sensors, fuel ratio everything that happens when the car is on! and i can vouch for my fellow nyc maximas!

So there are only advantages to doing this .... so who on earth wouldn't? I definately need to do this .... I run my car too hard a go through a tank a week. With no downside on performance and only a couple of bucks to save a ton of gas ... I can't wait.

ok...I'm going to go out on a limb here...

I don't think that changing a fuel filter is going to up your mileage. Granted..your motor will get more fuel to it..may lessen some strain on your fuel pump if it's REALLY clogged...but I can't see a filter affecting gas mileage.

To increase gas mileage I would think that you'd need to change things like aerodynamics, rolling resistance, engine efficiency meaning making your engine a more efficient air pump. A fuel filter will not affect these variables.

Have any of you guys who're getting low mileage done a tune-up? Maybe checked tire pressures? Noticed that your mileage changed after any modifications you've done?

I used to own a Ford Explorer. There was a guy on there who was getting 30 mpg in a V6 Explorer. A car that I could never get higher than 22 mpg with. He modded his with a larger air dam, 2wd only, windows up always, and he never drove over 70 mph. This was enough to get him incredible mileage. I would be interested to see someone do that on this board and report the results.

guys... how ever said that a bigger fuel filter will get more gas to the motor!!!!!
the computer controls how much is dumped into the motor... and if u get an intake the gas milage should go down because now more air then usual is entering the motor so more fuel must be supplied....

Although I initially started this thread to help out people who were getting poor gas mileage, it seems as though some people have missed the point of the original post, and have gone off rambling about there uneducated theories, so therefore, I must say - to my own thread -

dont forget to remember that your EGR valve has a drastic effect on gas mileage. i changed tghat and my fuel filter and air filter and now im hitting 30 miles per gallon.

Ok, first of all it wasn't the 300zx filter that gave you better gas mileage, it was just the fact it was a new filter. Second of all you're just giving people false hope as a new filter will not always make much of a change. This thread is nothing new as what you said has been in the FAQ for years and all it shows is that you've never read it. It should be common sense to do regular maintenance but even that won't make things better, it will however prevent things from getting worse. I've done everthing except replacing coolant to try and help get my gas mileage up. I get around 240 per 14/15 gallons, I always fill up as soon as I get to the 1/4 mark or just below it. My last resort would be to take out and clean out the EGR system but that's a lot of work.

Well hey! Then don't clean out the egr sys!

...but that could be the reason your mpg sucks. In the meantime go buy that 300zx filter, because it's bigger, and then wonder why your mileage hasn't gone up.

Your mileage could really be anything. Bigger rims, driving style, motor out of tune, etc. The only way to diagnose it is by the process of elimination. Changing your egr valve is relatively cheap and should be done anyway. It's not a bad place to start if you've eliminated everything else.

You're an punk, you know that? If you don't know what the hell you're talking about don't say a damn thing. The only advantage of the 300zx filter is that it last longer, why cause it's bigger. It doesn't give better fuel economy cause it's bigger, it does cause it's new and clean. Next time you open that mouth of yours think or you'll get flamed for stupidity. No crap my MPG sucks because of something but it's not just me. I know 10-15 maximas around here that get worse mileage than me and most are much newer. All have done everything but still nothing works. I even decided to not run my car past 2.5k rpm for a full tank and all that got me was an extra 15 miles. Changing the EGR valve is also not too smart since you can probably clean it and even then it's not always the valve but the hoses and pipes that are clogged.

Ok then. I'll stop answering your posts..no biggie there. Just a note..I agree with your assessment on the 300zx filter. Have agreed with you all along...maybe I don't know a thing?

That said..I was really only kidding you about cleaing the EGR sys. Yeah, it could be a lot of work but if it's broke, fix it.

So my nxt bit of advice...drink decaf and stop taking internet boards so seriously! It's bad for your heart and keyboard.

No worries ma'man! I didn't mean to say anything that might reflect on your manhood!

DAVE! No biggie! I was kidding around and trying to be funny. I must've set you off or something.

Hell...we agree man! Big filters don't equal better mpg!

But no harm. The internet is a weird place. One mistyped word and people are fighting like bikers.

I have been thinking about doing some cheapass experiments with mpg tho.

Just bought this car recently...1 owner, 224k miles. Even with the check engine light on, I got 421 miles on 14.5 gallons from my first tank. Almost 29 mpg. I am a happy camper!!
