So it was sunny so i decided i would throw thing thing up on some jack stands and see what is the problem once and for all. So i was poing around and i notice this.... shiny thing. Anyway also had a chance to check out the transmission which i am pleased to report is a properly functioning VLSD. so onto the pics...

it happened to my exgirlfriend's car, she had a 90 toyota camry, those engines were as bulletproof as ours.....most likely had a lack of oil. The same thing happened to her on the highway, too...but flames shot out of the engine bay.
I'd say that the car had no oil or coolant, overheated, or was running a 150 direct port shot of nitrous while turbo'd at 20psi, and downshifted into 2nd at redline 5th gear.

Zack342, are you just salvaging it for the transmission or are you going to put a new motor in the car? How many miles are on it? Is the body clean? Its hard to tell in the pictures, there's definetly a dent in the right front quarter and door.

Some people just driver cars? I know its hard to understand but they just drive them. if you look at the other pics of the interior you can see the motor was not the only thing neglected. Like i said before i bought the car from a guy this way with the intention of fix it but looking over the car i don't wanna fix it. i wanna keep the wheels and tranny and part everything else out. i don't know what caused the motor to eject a rod. My best guess is that the car was very low on oild and a bearing ceased and spun the rod but your guess is as good as mine. At this time my only conscern is if the tranny could have been damaged in this ordeal.
I cannot test the tranny until it is on my car but so far it shiftes into gear fine and when i had it up on jack stands the viscous coupling works according to the FSM. So i don't know if the tranny was damaged. my guess is worst case the clutch and flywheel may not have liked the whole ordeal.
Feel free to share opinions

That'd be my guess too. Woulda make a serious racket though...
I was w/ my brother in his 79 Monte Carlo when he spun a rod at about 6000RPM. Heck of an experience when your 13yrs old. The block was mangled when he broke it down.
The tranny should be fine. Congrats on your new LSD!

engine hari-kiri
A very good friend of mine, when he was even more mechanically inept than he is now, thew a rod through a block on an old f150. he thought he was filling the engine oil, when in fact he was filing the transmission fluid. So he was going over the courtney cambell causeway in tampa and he heard more of a racket coming from the engine than normal. Then he saw small flames were shooting out from under the hood, so he drove FASTER to blow them out. About half a mile later, the rod decided to commit hari-kiri and depart the block. His transmission, despite having ENGINE OIL in it, seemed to be ok, and he parted out the truck, the tranny went to someone we knew, and it worked until that guy sold the truck.
Yes, he has never lived this down, I still laugh about, because I was the one who went and picked him up on the side of the road.

How does the valvetrain look? As varnished as the bottom end is? How did you get the rod out? Was the hole that big?
Probably never changed the oil and ran it low. Lost oil pressure and seized a main bearing or a connecting rod bearing. Broke the cap off and the rod arm then slaps the side of the block and blows a hole.
Been there, done that unfortunately.

Haven't removed valve covers yet but i will this weekend. The hole wasn't terribly bit i kinda had to wiggle it out of the top half of the oil pan(aluminum part).
Jeff do you think this would cause any harm to the transmission? i assume within seconds of this while ordeal the engine would die and stop spinning instantlly therefore not harming the transmission?
I think miss shifting results in valve float and kill the engine for a whole other reason?
I just wanna know the TRANNY is ok VLSD.....
like i said. it goes into gear smoothly all the gates are defined. althought it goes into gear smoothly without me using the clutch. Both wheels spin when i jack it up and they spin in the same direction

When mine took a dump, it didn't hurt the tranny. But when you get it off (it's only like a 2 hour job for me), just spin the half shafts and the main input shaft. If it moves okay, you should be okay.
Just remove the oil cap and note the valvetrain color
