Advice needed on 4th Gen. vs. 5th Gen Muffler...

I've got a 1996 SE and may need to go back to a Stock muffler.

Is there any benefit of looking into potentially getting a 5th Gen muffler??

I only ask because I recall a couple of posts of individuals indicating some benefits of moving to a 5th Gen muffler. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find those posts now.

Is it difficult to install a 5th Gen. muffler?

And for those wondering why - the new Stillen muffler I just installed is a bit too loud for the wife. And yes, that suxxs!!!

Well its apparent who wears the pants in your family! Won't your wife get used to the difference in sound with the Stillen? Didn't you forewarn her before you ordered it?

Failing all else, turn the sound up or buy her some ear plugs, lol.

y would you want a 5 gen muffler when there is a circle cutout on the bumper...unless you were planning to change it to a rectangle I don't see a need to go with a 5gen muffler

Just my .02 cents

because the 5th gen is a variable muffler where another chamber opens up after 2k rpms....gains are minimal but there are some gains over a stock 4th gen

I have read before that you don't get much in performance gains by switching to a 5th generation muffler. It sounds like if you are stuck buying a stock 4th Gen or a stock 5th Gen then you might as well go with the 5th Gen to gain whatever minimal benefits are available, if it doesn't cost you too much. What about an aftermarket muffler? I put a dynomax on my little sentra se-r when the time came and it worked well. It was a bit loud but I could have easily opted for a quieter one. There are plenty of options out there with varying numbers of chambers, etc. There are plenty of options for tips too. It may be worth your broadening your search if the 5th gen muffler is expensive or doesn't fit right. Just a thought.

I thought that their were virtually no gains in any aftermarket muffler you can get for a car, just the sound and look will change basically. Am I wrong?

Appreciate all the input.

And to PIP900 - I am looking to sell it but would prefer to sell it locally - I live in Toronto Canada.

I'm not exactly sure what's entailed, but I would think it's a really big hassle packaging and shipping to someplace in the US. In addition, although the muffler is new - installed just over a month ago - I would think the purchaser would want to check it out before buying. Then there's the whole payment issue. I just thought it would be easier to try and sell it locally.

Gains are minimal just as some have already said. Getting a y-pipe w/ a 2k muffler would give you a nice tone (if that's something you're looking to do).

I love my 5th gen muffler. Installed nearly 3 years ago and running strong. Definate increases over the 4th gen no matter what some people say.
