Don't assume ... read the codes it's not that hard and can save you $$. Even if you're certain .. be that much more ... Little thing called confidence.

I wouldn't suggest tapping the knock sensor, it is fragile. Just check the codes, 5 minutes worth of work.

I have a dumb question ... how do you know your knock sensor is bad if your car won't throw a CEL and you don't have a OBDII scanner. I don't feel like paying some tire place $60 to check my ECU just to learn that nothing was wrong.

Stickies above will tell you how to use the self-diagnosis mode on the ECU. The code is 0304 in that mode. The knock sensor doesn't throw a CEL light because the knock sensor doesn't serve as an emissions function.

How much affect does the KS have on gas mileage? I've been having KS codes for a while now and I cant seem to figure out if it really has a huge affect on it. I have a 97 SE and getting about 18mpg city, is that normal?

No that't not normal. Yes, you get bad gas mileage and poor performance.

Thanks for the quick reply, you think its worth buying on my own and then having someone install, or just have nissan do it?

It's an easy install read the stickys ... You'll bang up your hand but it'll save you around 200 dollars and that's not including the part.
