Building trunk floor questions

I decided to try and build a trunk floor out of 1/2" fiber board and was wondering if anyone had any advice. I only have a jigsaw which I think will work just fine. Im also going to build a 45 degree amp rack against the back of the rear seats and, for now, bolt the sub box to the floor. Also about the spare tire access, my thinking was to just cut a square out and put hinges in so I could lift it up for easy removal. I was wondering about carpeting, where to get some or possibly just painting the whole think to match the car. Any thoughts are more than welcome

If that is what you want to do, trace it to cardboard first then trace to wood and cut. You will have to do it in sections of course cause one big piece won't fit. When I had my set up, it was only a false floor from the end of the wheel humps back. You can use a seperate piece for the 45 degree amp rack behind the seat.

use the carpet in the trunk as a guide. trace that out onto the wood that your going to use.

wherever your going to hinge it will be perfect to make the cut to make the entire piece fit in teh trunk. To keep from addint too much weight you can look into one by twos under the board as spacers and going with 1/2 inch mdf instead of 3/4

as well you can easily at this point router in plexi and flush mount it with underlighting or something of that nature.

if your looking to paint it your usually going to run into a problem as mdf is absorbent. Best bet in that case is to put a light coat of fiberglass resin over the top and a quick scuff, this will seal the wood and give the paint something to adhere to, also giving the ability for a gloss finish whereas the wood will just drink your paint. Carpet you can purchase from crutchfield or any decent audio store. also vinyl could be used hit up the walmart fabric secton.

I had 1 1/2" tall metal angle welded to the floor first to level it out from the back. Then i bolted 1/2" mdf to holes i drilled in my metal floor supports. I put a 2 pieces pf angle on each side of my spare tire well([ _______ ]), then laid another piece between them which sunk my floor right above my tire and allowed me to flush mount my amp, and keep my spare n tht trunk. If u give me an e-mail addy i can send u some pics. I am n the process of puttin suede on all of my floor panels. You can paint MDF or fiberboard, just be sure to prime it first, with home paint primer.

I just used the trunk mat and cut the plywood, they I had some metal cut so I could paint it the color of my car. also so I could weld my battery tray to it. Screw the spare tire I got rid of mine 3 years ago. if you travel long distance set it in the back seat floorboard

I am going to mod my trunk this summer aswell.
I decided to go with 2 individual sub boxes so that I could still use the seat fold down option (good for 2x4's.. skies... and so on)
i am going to do the same tire idea.
I was thinking about placing by amp between the subs, under some plexi glass.
This means i am going to raise the trunk to be flush everywhere (hump now because of spare)
I am also going to use the LIGHTEST wood out there, and cover with some carpet.
my 2 cents

Actually, it will fit.

I used the trunk carpet to trace onto a sheet of wood. I forget what kind it was, it was just out in the shed and was lightweight. I would have used MDF if I didn't care about weight, but my old setup (pics on cardomain) was a 3/4" MDF box for 2 10s and it weighed about 100lbs. I really felt the difference in the acceleration with all that in the trunk.

But anyways, if you cut it out by the dimensions of the carpet, then cut about 5 or so inches off the side next to the jack it will slide right in. At an angle of course

Oh btw I also cut out a circular access hole for the spare. Goes in and out very nicely. Hopefully I won't ever have to use it though.

Lata,
drew

Snow fell into my trunk this winter and the particle board got soaked and caved in. I have been looking to see if someone else had done anything like this.

awsome so far ive only spent about $65 for a nice jig saw, 2 saw horses, and the sheet of 1/2" fiber board which should be enough for the project. Thanks GodsmackMAX for the info on cutting 5" off so it will fit in 1 piece, I was going to try something like that anyway to get it to fit.
