Folks,

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread. I had the pesky code P0400 , changed a whole bunch of parts (EGRC/Valve). Found out about this thread regarding this issue and what fixed it. The pipe with the temp sensor was the culprit. It was plugged with carbon!

Keep the good work!! -stglock

No, it is not the same. Unfortunately,I don't have the haynes manual with me right now. I think p1400 = 1005. Don't quote me on that one.

Try turning the screw on the ecu and see what pops up.

If you've done everything else, try cleaning the egr tube next.

I fixed my 1005.

Took out the green Egr Solenoid and dis-assembled it, cleaned the metal peice/bearing inside and lubed it with silicone spray.

CEL hasnt came on for 3 days...

*south park* "Nice."

KHAMAN, look back about 3-7 pages, should be a thread about the EGR solenoid pics.

My cel light came on showing a bad EGR & Knock Sensor trip!
With the car up to temp, I put my fingure under the egr (you can feel the rubber baffel), when I reved up the motor I felt it rise and then pump (pop pop pop) my fingure (Bad Solenoid).
I posted some photos on the location of the Solenoid.
So far the light has not returned.
It took me about 20 minutes to change.
I suggest removing the air box.
I was able to slide a .25" ratchet with a 10mm under where the radiator hose connects.
P.S. Let the engine cool (my hands hurt)!

those were useless need a password...ive been looking online for a good 2 hours looking for a vacuum diagram for my 99 max...no luck but my guess (as i have the egr code P0400) is that if you start cheaply troubleshooting the vacuum lines, then cleaning out egr and anything that might be clogged, u might not have to buy needless parts...oh, and if you need a vacuum diagram or any other useful diagram check the public library in the "reference" section as I will...its become quite evident to me that these cars have TONS of issues with emissions and ignition..go to library make copies keep handy...or pay $$$ going to shop every time that damn light comes on

I've been getting codes 0409(oxygen sensor fault) & 0302. Are the two related at all? If so, which should i go after first?

There are 3 oxygen sensors on my 96 Max I don't know how many on a 98/ but I would say there are 3. If you never changed them and have over 100,000 you should..I have 200,000 and changed mine twice. Looks like I'm going to pay someone to change my Egr tube as I can't get it off.

What are you guys using to clean the clogged tubes? Just regular carb cleaner? Do you run any risk of fires with this stuff? Thanks for all the great info.!
