The in-car MPG readouts are not that accurate. The best way is to routinely calculate at every fill up by dividing milage (trip odo) by gallons of fuel. Even if using the "average" option, I still doubt that they're any more accurate than the pump, which has to be certified by the state every year, and your odometer.

We had a Buick Park Avenue rental car in CA a few years back and it got 70mpg....downhill.

I believe the on-board computer does its calculations based on the odometer and how much fuel is injected. I'd bet it's pretty damn accurate.

And you probably were getting 70MPG downhill...gravity was doing all the work.

I don't question the originator of this thread's ability to fill a gas tank, but his arithmetic skills are dubious.

Questioning my arithemetic is valid considering I'm an accountant But, 163.3 divided by 4.00 is 40.8. And yes, I read the correct numbers. My witness did as well. Look, believe me or not, I don't care. Personally, I know my car got phenomenal gas mileage. If you can't believe an excellent condition 4th gen on a dry, cool day on flat terrain at 59mph could get my kind of fuel economy, get the hell out of my thread.

I'm an accountant as well, and with all due reverence to the accounting fraternity, I still call BS! I know accountants can sometimes be referred to as being **** (I can attest to that). Why don't you hold off until some of these upcoming 300 miles trips, stop filling your car up every 50 feet, and report back to us with some credible numbers? I would like to audit them, lol!

I have noticed that my fuel economy is better than 99% of the members that post on this Board. I feel the most I could get under the slow driving scenario you described is 40 MPG to a Canadian gallon or 33.33 to a US gallon with flat driving surfaces at 60 MPH or less. My car has under 58,000 miles on it and runs like new.

How many miles do you have on this 96 Maxima?

Just turned 77K.

This car has always gotten better-than-average gas mileage. And 163 miles is hardly 50 feet. I do not expect to replicate these results though after yesterday. I installed the 00 VI and my car is running pretty rich right now. We'll see what happens.

Congratulations for having another low mileage Maxima. May it give you years of trouble-free driving. Don't screw it up!

Okay, update from one of my trips:

280mi @ 74mph using 8.8 gallons of BP 93 for a fuel economy of 31.8mpg. Will post again when I complete my next 200+ mile trip.
