I Hate Potholes

I Hate Potholes
I was driving on a really crappy highway last night for about 6 hours and visibility was not good due to rain. I hit a lot of potholes and now there is this humming noise that sounds like it is coming from the drivers side wheel. It can be heard at just about any speed, but mostly when you are over 10mph. It is emitted each revolution of the wheel. I have been searching through the forums to see if people have had similar problems, but nothing has seemed definite. Could it be the wheel bearing?
Thanks for any replies!

I know exactly what you mean! Oddly enough, when I made my tripe home to NJ from CT, I had to take that awful stretch of 95 that goes through NY and I had the same type of situation. From what other members have stated, it seems to be a wheel bearing issue. I have read a few threads on here, and the only symptom that includes a humming or whining noise from the front tire seems to be mostly wheel bearing problems. My car only has 64k miles on it, so I am leary about pulling the front end apart to replace the bearing myself, especially when i don't know 100% if thats the issue. To answer your question though, yes, humming or whining from the front tire especially noticable at lower speeds between 5-25 mph is quite possibly your wheel bearing. Once I get over about 25, I don't hear the noise any more, but I think that is due to the exhaust and wind being louder than the humming.

damn potholes, there is this pothole near my house on the 85 freeway, anyone who lives around the area knows about it and avoids it, but this one time, i wasn't paying attention and accidently went over the pothole, felt like i drove my car down a curb, i felt it through my body, good thing nothing major happened

I just went for a drive and noticed that while the sound can be heard when the wheel is centered, it is much louder when turning to the right. I can barely hear it at all when turning to the left.
I almost wouldn't mind having all major highways be toll roads if they actually fix the ****ing pot holes. In the end it would probably cost me less.

I agree, I hate potholes, the highways in Mass are always horrible so far they have destroyed three of my rims. supposedly you can write the state and if you can prove it was something wrong with the road that caused the damage to your car you can get them to pay for the damage. Atleast thats what I have been told although I have never heard of it definitely working. and I'm not sure how you would go about proving it. But sorry to hear about your bad luck best of luck with the repairs.

yeah the city is usually responsible and should pay for any damages to your rims. Usually they just ask for quotes of the repairs.

LA has its share too as of now. It was ok until the rain got pretty bad for the past 3 months or so... There is one right off of the 405 South Inglewood exit that I always remember to avoid but I hit it today and oh man... I feel bad for my car everytime I hit one. I talk to my car too everytime I hit one hard... My friends think I'm crazy at time also. Thank God no damages to the new rims I got. whew.

Check the wheels
Before you go spending any money, rotate the tires and see if the noise still comes from the same spot. If the noise comes from a different spot, then it's a wheel/tire problem. You're rim may be dented or warped, or there's a problem with the tire.

More then likely its a wheel bearing problem. I was having that same exact problem last week. I made right turns and there was this annoying noise, and i could actually feel there was something wrong with wheel. Lo and behold I took it to my mechanic this weekend and was told my wheel bearing was bad....Damn NY and these potholes. within the last month i've had to change both my inner and outer tie rods and shoulder control arm...hope you get that checked out cause i know the sound is annoying as hell
