Clock cutting out / not working

I keep hearing that this is a common problem, but can't find anything in the stickies...

The clock on my 97 SE is going weird - sometimes it works, sometimes stays blank

When blank, sometimes pushing the defog/blinker button would turn on the clock

Question, is this common, and is there a 'standard' way to fix it?
Also, if the clock is dead, do the blinker/defrost buttons still work?

Thanks.

take out the clock, take it apart and see if there are any loose connections. If there are just re-solder them down. Yes, the defroster and yeild buttons will still work if the clock is out.

same problem here...I took the clock out and everythin seemed fine but the connector wasnt staying in place too well to keep it on all the time. I taped it up and put it back but now its the same way it was, the solution was only temporary. I gave up on it, its not that important to me

Thanks guys. I guess that FSM from PhatG20.net will come in useful now

Anything in particular I should be on a lookout for in there?

now i have a good one for you.

what if you have no loose connections and only when the stereo hits the clock dims, not like the dash lights but almost to nonextinction then comes on regular brightness and alternates, but not with the beat almost like it is on its own with te bass as a catalyst.

The clock on my 95 was crapped out when I bought the car. Rather than pay $50 for a replacement, I just went and desoldered and resoldered all the connections. It took about 45 minutes total. I also had to replace the one capacitor. After that the clock works perfect. Or you could just buy an aftermarket radio with a built in one and screw Nissan's crappy clock.

That looks sweet. Mind if I ask how you did it? What was the wiring setup for the lights and such?
