What happened??
I was driving at about 10mph (just completed turn), my steering wheel became totally unresponsive and every dash light came on. Anyone know what happened or what to check? I don't want this to happen again, especially at higher speeds.

Well, I took the car to the track yesterday and there were prolonged sprints of ~120mph on the way to the track. I've also managed to put over 1,000 miles on the car in two weeks.

it could have possibly been a "safe mode" of some kind, or there could have been a short somewhere in the system....i've never really heard of this before, but i'd check my ecu for trouble codes as soon as I could.

If its out of 14.1-14.7, proceed...
Check the voltage between the positive terminal and a secure metal ground (with the engine running of course). It it now registes 14.1-14.7, then there is a faulty connection to/from the battery someplace or just a dead battery. If its below 14.1, then you have a dying alternator.
Otherwise, just head over to autozone or pepboys ect... they will usually do a test for free. Just ask them what the reading is though, because they told me that mine was 'fine' (They didnt' tell me it was at 11.XXX, I had to glance over and look at the diagnosis tool) and then the alternator crapped out on me a week after.

Is this safe mode only on 96 models? Where I work the road is heavily traveled so I usually go down to the next light make a u-turn and sometimes stomp it. Never had the car go into safe mode or anything just burns rubber.

i wouldnt be surprised if the alternator is just on its way out and not completely shot. hopefully if it happens it's not when you're in dire need of driving you're car, i had my alt done under recall and it took the dealership 2 freakin days to do it!@*(&@#(

I took a hard turn one night, and my car did the exact same thing... it started up, then the next day, my alternator went out at 96K miles, at the Wendys drive-thru window
great fun! I had to jump start it 7 times to get to my work about 5 min away. Over there, I tested the alternator, and it was shot....had to recharge the battery and the whole nine. I really suggest getting your alternator tested, or you doing it yourself, there is no harm in doing it. It will probably save you some hassle in the future.
Our alternators aren't the easiest things to replace, actually it is a bish...it took me about 5 hours.

Damn. Looks like I'm skipping class on Thursday to do the following:
1) Put EGR back together and bolt it to 00 VI
2) KS
3) Alternator
Gonna be a long day under the hood.
