Tranny woes..

About a month ago I noticed the tranny was shifting a touch to hard, but the dealership said everything was totally fine and nothing to be worried with. So I put it to imagination and passed it off.

So fastward today and Im going to a friends and I notice the car is really acting crappy and its shifting hardcore.. So I pull over check the fluid it seems perfect but I put a touch more in it just to be safe. Well issue continues then when I get my friends houes I pull in the driveway I see that the tranny shot some fluid out. Now I dont know if the transmission on cars have a excess valve but it only leaked when was driving and pulled in his driveway.

Anyhoo so now I gotta take it to nissan tommrow if its too much im just going to throw a new tranny in

Any ideas?

Seemed to be shifting okay last night and today it went from good to ****.

is this the stuff bmw uses? as the tranny fluid gets hotter this has the opposite effect and cools it down? do they sell it at autostores? how did it feel when you used it? and did you do a flush before pouring it in? lol sorry about all the questions but im curious

If it's not slipping, it should be alright. Normally my 4g shifts pretty damn hard, but lately the tranny's on its way out and slips everyshift, it's downright sickening compared to what it used to be. Oh well, 5spd soon to come.

Just recently one of my tranny seals went, the one that seals the cv joint, it bled all over, but fixed it and it was fine the next day.

Once again if it;s not slippeing don;t worry.

Well true if it's slamming into gear and clunking, the that's also a bad sign, I just tough it was semi harsh ... but seems to be fubard from what you're stating. Are any of your tranny codes showing up? Solenoids?

Hey Prophecy1,

Noticed that you are from Lexington, KY, which is where I am too. Would you happen to know where they do tranny best in Lexington? I have a 95 Max with A/T and it doesn't shift into the 2nd gear untill I hit 2500 rpm. Checked the error codes and it came up to be "Improper shifting to 4th gear". I am assuming that I probably will have to do a tranny re-build. Any ideas who does it best? I just got it a month or so ago

Sup RAM,

Actually Im in between mechanics right now. I used to have Danny at Horse Power House work on my car but the shops owners well they got in serious trouble and boom they are gone.

Im actually letting Glenn Nissan work on my car or at least tell me whats wrong with it.
To me if I have a severe tranny issue that will cost alot of money Ill just buy a new tranny and have some friends put it in.

What ever you do dont rebuild your tranny your talking wayy to much money.

But I might have some better info after I find out whats wrong with my max.

Also check out www.lexistreets.com later lots of lexington information there.

Hey Proph,

Thanks a lot. I am taking my max to Glenn Nissan today to get a quote on the tranny issues. The thing is, this is my first ever car and so I have no clues on what could be done and cheapest too. For example, on the tranny issue, I thought the only solution is to re-build the tranny. Now that you suggest that I buy a tranny and get some friends to fix it, two questions pop up...

Where to buy the tranny... used/new?
How hard is it to fix a tranny?

I'll check that site out right now. Thanks a ton.

Ram_Maximus Dont rebuild your tranny its just wayyy to high of cost. IF you need a new tranny call around for a 4th gen tranny with low miles from the salvage yards. You can get a tranny for 200-350 dollars used where as a rebuild is about 1500 for the work. Ontop of that you could pay someone 300 or so to install it cause its easier to install by far then to work on them.

If you need someone to put it in there is people on Lexistreets.com that will do it. Just post the information you will find someone who will do it.

Hey Proph,

I got my verdict today and I gotta redo/replace the tranny. The dealer quote hasn't come in yet but I expect it to be in the upper 1000s or lower 2000s. I definitely think that the salvage yard is a very good choice. The thing though is that I have absolutely no experience in cars.. that is how I ended up with this car ! Thank you for the leads though. Is there a good junkyard that people frequent? I need an odometer too.

Thanks !

You had to pay 1000 ? Is that how much they charged you for a tranny? I would think thats cheap dude. This other place quoted $1700 apply for a tranny re-build.

"I don't bro.. I had to pay 1000"

I didn't get this part quite as clear..You don't what?

I got my quote from the dealer..... its $3200 . Now add $800 to it and you can buy my Maxima . Now need to seriously locate junkyards and ppl to put my tranny in !
