Any Reason Not to get 99 if want to mod

Just like the title says. Found a 99 max 5spd 56000 miles for only 6k could be alil cheap so i gotta go see it. But besides the ecu because that cant be upgraded i believe (correct me if im wrong) but is there anything else on why not to get the 99 max Se with leather?

The coilpacks (going bad) tend to be more of an issue on 99 model maximas Also there are two different emissions specifications for the 99 model (federal and california). Aftermarket y-pipes eliminate the two precats from the stock y-pipe. If you get a cali-spec emissions 99 model, then only one precat can be eliminated (less power gain potential). Try reading the FAQs.

Sounds like a good deal. Be sure to check it out with a fine toothed comb. The ECU upgrade is the only drawback I can think of, but you will be getting a newer car with low miles. Anything wrong with your 97? It may be a hassle to try to sell your current car and you are incurring some risk buying a used car as always. Guess it depends.

Well i think that i have a buyer for my car. I did read the FAQs i was just wondering if there was anything else. I knew about the coilpacks i just forgot to mention them in the orginal post. Thanks for the info tho. Is the 3.5 ecu upgrade able since i might put the whole 3.5 in my car?

It's almost a domino effect with the ecu though, b/c then it leads to ECU upgrade/extended limiter etc, but still a 00vi with an ecu will still give better pwoer under the curve as well as 5k+

I got an ermail from Ben Pila (frm JWT)
Dated 3/10/05

"We have not completed our long term development of ECUs for 1997+ model Maximas. The 1997-99 style ECUs are the next ones to be completed in the future. It is unknown at this time exactly how long before the 2000+ model ECUs will take before we can begin upgrading these." JWT is close how's TS?
LAter on it goes to say about using the 95/6 in the 97-8 but not 99

Um, it specifically says that they are currently WORKING on 97-99 ECUs. They aren't ready yet to be sold.

I dunno what all this 1997-1999 ECU BS talk is all about.

exactly. that's not the point tho.

The point is that there is no 1997-1999 JWT ECU that can be simply connected w/o a CEL and fabrication.

supposidley you can put in a 96 ecu and have no problems, there is a guy who did it, and is waiting to install it in his 99, we are waiting to hear back from him at the moment.

Coilpacks like everyone else said. My went bad and I just ordered new ones for a whopping $355.

Also, the Stillen SC kit is not CARB approved for 99's.

On the bright side, 99's have outside temperature display.

And they came with Traction control as an option (very rare and hard to find)
