Is Hacking Airbox Good?
i just did it about 2 wks ago. u only get that deeper sound at WOT or around 3k+ rpm. my gas milage did go down the first tank, but that was only b/c i drove it a racecar that first tank b/c i LOVED the sound. my gas mileage has gone up slightly, but thats probably due to the fact that i also changed my fuel filter at the same time i did the airbox. given that i did both at once and my mpg went up slightly, im assuming that the airbox either did nothing for mpg or helped it go up slightly.
Problem is if you hack the airbox, you can't unhack it when you grow tired/get sick of the racket it makes. I went with a K&N panel air filter because I'm not into noise and it does have a bit of a growl at WOT, particularly with the Budget y-pipe.
You are also drawing in hot air from the engine compartment when you are standing still. I say find an airbox at a junkyard and hack that one up. If you ever want to go back then you have your stock one.

Yea, I got another bottom half from a junkyard for $10.
I cut off half my airbox facing the fender as to not suck in hot air directly off the engine block, and I have a noticable growl well below 3k RPM.
The type of sound you get is going to be completely based on what you cut out. If you drill holes up close you're going to hear air sucking through them etc. I cut off half (the bottom and sides) towards the fender as I said, and I'm very happy with the results.

I've never heard anything other then my own so I can't speak for sound, but I like mine with the fender half missing.
