Is Hacking Airbox Good?

Im thinking of hacking my airbox to get that deeper sound when driving. Is this mod safe to do? What effects will I get by hacking it? Will it affect my gas/mileage?

i just did it about 2 wks ago. u only get that deeper sound at WOT or around 3k+ rpm. my gas milage did go down the first tank, but that was only b/c i drove it a racecar that first tank b/c i LOVED the sound. my gas mileage has gone up slightly, but thats probably due to the fact that i also changed my fuel filter at the same time i did the airbox. given that i did both at once and my mpg went up slightly, im assuming that the airbox either did nothing for mpg or helped it go up slightly.

it's "good". Kind of pointless though if you ask me. Unless of course you pee in your pants when you hear it.

Problem is if you hack the airbox, you can't unhack it when you grow tired/get sick of the racket it makes. I went with a K&N panel air filter because I'm not into noise and it does have a bit of a growl at WOT, particularly with the Budget y-pipe.

by hacking it does it make an annoying loud noise or is it deep and smooth?

It doesn't do anything bad to your car........Just that you will probably get tired of it, and you'll eventually want a real cold air intake for a more deeper sound.....

You are also drawing in hot air from the engine compartment when you are standing still. I say find an airbox at a junkyard and hack that one up. If you ever want to go back then you have your stock one.

That sounds like a good idea, I think im going to try it. I guess I should clean the throttle body and change my filters since I will be under the hood already.

Yea, I got another bottom half from a junkyard for $10.

I cut off half my airbox facing the fender as to not suck in hot air directly off the engine block, and I have a noticable growl well below 3k RPM.

The type of sound you get is going to be completely based on what you cut out. If you drill holes up close you're going to hear air sucking through them etc. I cut off half (the bottom and sides) towards the fender as I said, and I'm very happy with the results.

its good for some nice low end power. it doesnt sound as deep as a cai or short ram. btw i think cai is garbage for a car like ours if you want quick accel. either stick with hacked air box or short ram

Do you have pictures showing how you cut your air box by any chance?

If you've got the time experiment... Keep cutting away and testing until you get what you like.

I've never heard anything other then my own so I can't speak for sound, but I like mine with the fender half missing.

me and my buddies flipped over a filter in a civic and it made a ridiculously low pitch sound, sounded neat but lost a little gas mileage

What gas mileage? My Max never got good gas mileage.

My mileage went down because I love the sound of it. I think if I calm down, whenever I do, it will increase.
