5Spd Manual tranny leak
5Spd Manual tranny leak
I've got to replace the backup/neutral switch on a 1998 5spd since it's leaking. Anything tricky about this other than the one phillips head hex-head bolt to remove it?
I'm going to replace the fluid with MT-90.
Also Where is the actual drain plug located? I've found the big fill plug in the front.
Are there gaskets on the drain/fill plugs?
Thanks

its pretty easy- one bolt to remove. the backup/neutral switch is by far the fastest way to drain the tranny. it's gonna be a gusher, so be ready with a drain pan.
on mine, the wiring harness went through the main transmission mount so i just cut the old wires and routed the new ones around to the plug in.
beware-there are a few of us who found that the leak was actually coming from the half-shaft and was a sign of failing differential bearings in the tranny.

Do you know where the real drain plug is also? Usually there's a magnet on it that I'd like to clean off...
Also regarding the driveshaft leak, which one seems to fail? The outboard/drivers side seems fine. I can't see an obvious leak on either shaft....

It's near the shifter input to the tranny, facing the engine. See here:

I guess you're replacing the backup switch, but anyway be very careful when removing it - the plastic flange is quite brittle. Twist it out since the o-ring has a pretty good grip on the housing; don't insert a screwdriver and twist. (ask me how I know
