How max got his groove back

I had noticed a severe drop in performance of the max lately (month or so) so I ran the codes and got 0304, so I researched and low and behold... need a new ks. I thought well it can't do that much, right? Wrong!!! Holy CRAP, is what I literally said out loud last night after my first test drive after replacing my ks. All max's growl is back and since I also tried a few other maintenance items to get my swerve back, he is badder than ever.

long story short, if you have yet to replace your ks....DO IT ASAP!!

knock sensor on ebay....$96 shipped

Max getting his groove back (all of it)......priceless!!!

Were you high when you came up with this thread and the title for it? Also what's the point of it? Yes, a KS is expensive.

How many miles on your maxima? I'm wondering when people typically change the knock sensor? I have the same car as you, way2fast95, but I should be good to go for quite awhile, I would think, as I only have 58K (mostly highway) miles.

i think we've all noticed what's happening to the fourth gen forums

however, your thread does nothing to help this "trend", instead you are participating in what you're b*tching about

"going down in flames."

First off, yes I call my car a guy, he has a stick. And no actually after reading the skippynet and motorvate methods, I was still able to get my big hand in there without a scratch.

Second off, this was not meant to be a flame fest or a brag thread, this was supposed to be an eye opener for those that might be experiencing decreased power from there VQ. I have not yet experienced a greater feeling from my car to this day as did I punching it last night with the new ks installed. If you are delaying changing the ks, don't wait another day.

And on another note,
I am starting to notice a trend in the 4th gen forums, as the 4th gens age, they decrease in value and any young kid who does he research will see that the 4th gen max is a great car that he can now afford. So they buy one, then get on here and do nothing but flame people all day long. Time to get a 6th gen I guess. To flame is immature, unless it's someone who doesn't read the stickies, then they deserve it. Lets see, I got flamed by a 3 twenty year olds and an 18 year old. The only people who didn't flame were Kevlo and murdoch, who is 53. BTW- murdoch if you run the ecm codes and get 0304 you should test and if need be change the ks, it is a great feeling getting full power back. I don't want this to become a b!tchfest, I just felt like I needed to defend my comments from this "attack". I know my car is not the biggest and baddest, if I wanted that I would pay 70k and have a skyline. I like my car because it is fun to drive and paid for.

Gordon- have you had your ks go out yet? have you felt the drop in power or the increase in power when you replace it? It is approx. the same increase you get from adding an aftermarket y pipe, the greatest of all bolt-ons.

over and out.

werd.. i as well currently have an 0304 code. i dont want to spend 100$ on a new KS though, im thinking wouldn't it be a smarter move to get a KS from another maxima (4th gen.. im guessing the 95-99 have the same KS? or does 97-99 have a different one?) and swap it into mine?

Worst case scenerio i'll get another ECU code saying my KS is shot, in which case i try again ..

comments?

Axis- you could definietly get a ks out of another max as long as it is a 4th gen and the other ks is still in good shape. My old one was cracked when I removed it, probably due to the heat from the engine over time.

g4- there is a company in cali that is importing them and clearing all the red tape, only problem is they are making a pretty penny on them too. So a $40k car becomes $70k.

I strongly urge you though what ever you do, whether it be a used ks or a new one, replace it you will thank yourself when you are done.

And when you are sticking your hand down in there to start threading the bolt back on, take your time, you CAN avoid the "bloody stump" if you go slow.

Thanks for your responses all.

Cheers.

Not to mention that the board is diarrhea'd with kids talking about rims, drops, taillight mods, and suspension 'upgrades'. (C'mon, it's a Maxima, not a Lotus) It's to the point any meaningful threads get pushed off in 3 hours sometimes. I'm just happy I contributed a few buck so I could use the Search feature and filter out that junk. There really is good info buried in this database.

Hey, glad you contributed the results of your work. Too many technical threads go on but the original poster doesn't follow up with info on what finally fixed it.

Contributing is my next "mod" actually come to think of it, I am going to do that right now.

Doesn't contributing add like 10+ hp? 15 if I have altezza's!

I seriously think everyone who has ever gotten anything from this site should at least throw them an Andrew Jackson.

Over the past few weeks I have noticed a "flat spot" in my acceleration. Actually a couple of flat spots. Could this be caused by the KS getting ready to go? I just turned 100K about 2 weeks ago. I don't have any CEL codes but I remember reading something that said that the KS may not throw codes all the time.

djmav- between what rpm's is this flat spot? The only way it would be a spot is if the ks were working and actually detecting knocking and thus retarding your timing to save your cylinders, rods, and crank.

It's usually between 3200 and 3700 rpm. I only use premuim gas and have done so since I bought the car. The strange thing is that the "flat spot" just started happening a couple of weeks ago and it does it in all gears (well 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th) at the same rpm range.

This was happening to my car, Checked ecu and I retreived ghost code for 0304 (cel was not on)...Replaced KS, and this problem went away.

My car was lagging bad in the lower rpm range, actually once it hit 3500 or so, it actually felt kinda normal. But yes the ks (0304) will not trigger the CEL, it is a ghost code that must be manual pulled from the ecm.

djmav- did you manually pull your ecm codes?

Once you learn what you are doing, it only takes a minute to pull your codes manually. Flat head screwdriver, flashlight, and 60 seconds are all you need. Ooops and pen and paper to write 'em down if you got 'em.

Most people use a screwdriver. I just bought this however, http://www.scantool.net/products/elmscan_iso.htm , along with this http://www.digimoto.com/ and that's what I'll be using from now on.

Must you use a laptop with these scanners? I thought there were handheld ones that just ring up the numbers on the screen for you.

Yeah, but those just show codes. Why spend $40-$50 on those when for $30 more I can have so much more? Yeah, you need a laptop.

What's the "cheapest" reasonably reliable scanner? Just getting the four digit codes on a little screen is more than good enough for me. Let me know what you have that works and is cheap. I love my max, but she's getting up there in age. Don't want to spend any small fortunes...
