well i bought my maxima from my aunt a few months ago, she had got it from my grandparents a few years before that. they bought it new from nissan and took really good care of it. since she had it she would only replace things that broke. i got the car with 87,000 miles and have all the records. from them i can tell that the air and fuel filter were replaced around 31,000 miles and i dont think the plugs have ever been changed. i just changed the air filter and fuel filter with the 300zx one today. the air filter was disgustingly black so hopefully i can get some better mileage now. anything else recommended from anybody, trying to get the mileage back up to par.

I would also run the ecm codes and see if it gives you anything. It only takes a minute to run the codes so why not?

Check ECU codes for any other problems(check the sticky on how) and I 'd expect the Knock Sensor to go at around 100k. Also I know the platinum are supposed to last like 100k but personally I'd change em with copper plugs.

It helps if you state what kind of Maxima you have, its year and whether it is an automatic or a 5-speed. I assume its an automatic as your grandparents and aunt previously owned it.

It sounds like the car may well need new plugs and perhaps a PCV valve, they're inexpensive

As stated above, have the 60K service done. Special attention should be paid to all the fluids: replace power steering fluid, pH test the radiator coolant and flush and replace if required, flush the transmission or at a minimum drain and replace the tranny fluid.

What condition are the brakes and belts and hoses in?

Make sure you only use NGK plugs: OEM platinum or copper. Also do all the visual checks outlined in the owners manual, eg. exhaust system, fuel system, suspension, steering and driveaxle, EGR valve, idle speed and engine timing.

It might not hurt to clean the throttle body and IACV as well as well as adding some fuel additive (eg Chevron Techron, SeaFoam) before the next oil change.
