Car issues when starting

ok guys, afterwork today, i turned on my car, and my rpm kept going up and down. it would go up to maybe 1500rpm then drop to about 200rpm right about to stall and then it went back up on its own to about 1500rpm again and it kept doing it. finally sick of it, i had to wot to about 4000rpm then it acted fine after that.

later this night, i turned on my car again after school and it did the same thing but this time, it just stalled.

any ideas? this if really frustating. thanx.

oh btw, no CEL

I first was thinking maybe a vacuum leak but if it stopped acting up after the WOT at 4K then thats out the window.

Maybe check the TPS could be malfunctioning.
When was the last time the Fuel Filter was changed.

Just Some ideas

Something in your cold start program/parts. ie.. there is a solenoid valve that keeps the idle up during the cold start.

My favourite answer for these symptoms is the Engine Coolant Temp Sensor, maybe check codes ,could be a ghost one (normally throws CEL), but it does excactly those symptoms

Its the plug on the right, and somewhere in the howtos it tells you how to check if it is working with in the norm ranges

I've just brought new sensor $NZ40($USD15odd), haven't installed yet because dam plug is stuck in sensor and don't want to wreck wires pulling it out

nah i just had that problem. get this stuff...i forget what its called... from any parts store that is suppost to clean your throttle body out. its a spray and you're suppost to use the whole can. open your throttle body and spray the whole can in it and then start your car and rev it like there's no tomorrow cuz it will stall if you don't keep it revved afterwards. it needs to spray all the nastiness out of the exhaust then it will run fine. i just had that problem and this fixed it perfectly.

nah i don't think that's what it was called. it came in a black/grey colored can and it was specifically for throttle body cleaning. i think it might have just been called "throttle body cleaner." but it solved that problem perfectly!

Had the same problem and I cleaned my IACV and now my car is running like normal. First thing is before you spend any money is clean this part! it is really easy to do and it takes 10 minutes of your time. Trust me I waited over a month wondering what the problem was before I was fed up and just cleaned this part. If it isnt then oh well it probly needed to be cleaned anyways.

so take everything out, intake, maf until you can get to the throtle body.
Manualy open it up and spray the whole can in there, after its done, crank up the car and rev it like crazy until no more nasty smoke comes out of the exhaust piping? is that right? so is this just any throtle body cleaner can?

Its the upper radiator hose on the right hand side of the engine (when standing in front of car)

And as always, check the ignition switch under the steering column for bad solders (VERY common)
