Arghh car misfires 4 days after I buy it!!
So I need some help here...just paid a ****load on my new max and am feeling poor as hell. Now my SES light is on, and codes read "cylinder 6 misfires", and ignition malfunction. I assume this is a fuel/spark issue that has affected cylinder 6.
What are some common parts that could have gone out that would cause this? My best guesses were plugs, injectors, or coils. Also, if I haven't started the car in a while, it wont fire up til the second try...not cool!
I think the problem may have been because I used premium gas from a pump that was no joke at least 30 years old, and in the middle of rural Iowa where I'm sure no one uses premium anyway...
How can I remedy this problem in the cheapest way???

It's you coils, but your lucky. Your ECU picked up the cylinder with the bad coil. Start by replacing cylinder #6 coil pack and your misfire, if your luck, should go away.
If you continue to get a misfire, or your engine surges, replace the remaining 5 coil packs. Unfortunately the 99's are known to have a ton of coil failures.

You have to pay full price for service bulletin repairs (unless you're still under warranty). Only recalls are free.
Either buy a used set from eBay and keep the rest as spares for the future or just buy some new ones...

What are the chances the Stealership has reset the ECU which cleared the code, and came back 4 days after you owned it

You can try this out if you want to (write up all the way in the end): http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=389309
95-99 are the same. Nissan was switching manufacturers or something for the 99s (maybe late 98s also) and they didn't turn out so great... Nissan doesn't want to issue a recall so you gotta pay out of pocket
They should have them or you can check eBay for used ones
He bought it from a private party (read a few posts up) so either the seller had it reset or it just happened for the first time right now

I think they fixed the problem with the coils going bad, but you can look at what brand your coils are and buy the other brand instead (Nissan has Hanshin and Mitsubishi but someone mentioned that they might be getting rid of one of those)
I would personally just buy a set from eBay and keep the rest as spares just incase other coil packs go bad later on...
Go try this out and see if it does anything http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=389309

yeah go read my beta. it should fix your woes, but you need a lot of elbow power, and dont be afriad of blisters. Im trying to make a fuse between sparkplug wires and our coils. But all 95-99 coils are interchangeable.

im new to the whole maxima forum, so i cant submit a new post....so i'll just add to this one. I'm guessing i have a coil issue, as at high(er) rpm (3250+) i get a loss of power/misfiring along with what sounds like backfiring (sharp popping) I initially passed this off as bad gas and i was just pinging/knocking, causing timing to be pulled, hence the loss of power. I just put a new tank in and the problem persists. The car is perfectly fine under low load conditions. I threw a code yesterday, which caused the check engine light to blink for a while, but not stay on. I guess i could go check codes, but im wondering if this is what it feels like to have coils that are on their way out. Oh yeah, the car is a 99.
edit: apologies for the apparent hijack...pm'ing responses would probalby be the best so i dont tie up this thread with useless info for the original poster...
